HORNBROOIC Cafifornidns Welcome Sun By MRS. H. H. CHAPMAN Hornbrook A welcome breath of "springtime," in the form of sunshine and clear skies, greeted this part of water-logged northern California Sunday 1 morning. Siskiyouans by the hundreds turned out on the highways to take advantage of this first nice Sunday in weeks.. Among those enjoying the day were John and Mike Brunk, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Brunk. The boys were part of a group of about 75 students from St. Mary's academy in Medford who enjoyed a snow party at Siski you summit, skiing, toboggan ing and sledding. The young sters were accompanied by a large number of their parents. Hornbrook Troop 38 of the Boy Scouts also took to the snow areas of the mountains on Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ruko vino of Medford were in Horn brock Sunday where they called on Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bre ceda. Mrs. Rukovina is the daughter of Mr: and Mrs. Chet Kettlewell, former residents who now make their home in Calistoga, Calif. Mr. Kettlewell, who has ber in failing health for some time, is ( reported "about the same." Hornbrook grange held their regular meeting at the Grange hall Friday evening, Jan. 27, at which time ten new members were initiated. They were Mrs. Gordon Jacobs, Mrs. Grace Quigley, Mr. - and Mrs. Jack Cross, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hen ley, Mr. and Mrs. Al Gregory, and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Adams. Vayne Ralston, district deputy from Yreka,. -was installing offi cer. Park Shelley of Yreka, who is insurance agent from Green horn Grange, gave a talk on Grange insurance. Mrs. Mary Lemos, also a member of Green horn Grange, was a visitor. Tom Watt Jr., part owner of the Johnson Trucking' iinr.s and dock manager of Willamette Builders supply, report-: that their trucks are now able to get through on the Klamath River road for the first time since the pre-Christmas floods .of Dec. 21. The first loads of veneer arrived here from Happy Camp last Sat urday, after having been' pushed out by "cat" on the detour which was established, where the Scott river bridge had been washed out in the flood. Since Sunday the trucks have been atle to make the entire trip under their own power. The veneer is brought in here to the loading dock where it is trans ferred to railroad cars for ship- Bids For Prison Boiler Are Opened Salem (U.R) Low bids totaling more than S330,0b9 for construction of a state prison boiler house were accepted here yesterday by the State Board of Control on condition that they be approved by the . legislative emergency- board which meets here Feb. 10. E. . E. Baterman, Salem, was low at $11,982 for the general building ' construction. Low bid for mechanical construction was submitted by P. S. Lord, Port land. It was $122,600. The Elec tric Corporation, Salem, was low for electrical work with $81, 970. - . The boiler house, which will ment. The docks, of the Yreka Veneer , Co., . adjacent to . the Hornbrook depot, also has been able to - resume- loading operations. be located outsid the prison walls, will cost $335,545. How ever, an additional $20,000 will be needed to extend , a steam tunnel inside the walls. The board ' agreed that it should wait for an Army report on flight patterns which might affect location 'of a proposed mental hospital in the Wilson ville or Hillsboro areas. . Several sites are being con sidered for the air base in areas where the state has options to build, the hospital. A flight pat tern . report is expected within two weeks. In other business, the board accepted the resignation of its secretary, E. J. Bill Ireland, with regret and ordered a . letter of commendation for him. U.P.) The Hunterdon County Board of Freeholders decided Tuesday to crack . down on county road gangs. The board made the ruling aft er learning that several road gangs had been surprised play ing cards and sipping beer on the job. The freeholders said that in the future they will re quire official reports of such in stances instead of just repri mands. - A. A. Milne Dies After Long Illness Hartfield, England (U.R) A: A..
