Bartlett Baldness Many men want to know if there is any logical way of avoid in" the corrrnT of baldness or. if m there is any scientific treatment that will bring back' hair af ter it is' gone. All my - ques tioners need do is to look at the top "of my head and see that I, per sonally, do not know of any thing that will bring back hair. I imagine there are few physi cians who attempt to treat bald ness. If one goes to a skin spec ialist, he is likely to try a few so-called scalp tonics; but I think he does it half-heartedly. One could, of course, go to laymen who advertise that they can grow hair but after reading the very unfavorable reports of Bet ter Business Bureaus about some of these men, I would certainly not recommend anyone to go to them. Because most persons want to keep doing something, they can rub in ointments and "hair tonics." When, in my thirties, I began to lose my hair fairly rapidly, I went to a number of skm special ists and asked them what to do. They all gave me the same oint ment, consisting of 10 per cent sulfur and 1 per cent salicylic acid. For years I rubbed it into my scalp every night, but I don't know that it delayed the coming of baldness. Tendency in Certain Families If anyone will look about him at fathers and sons, in many -a case he will notice that a tenden cy to the loss of hair runs in cer tain families. I think right now of a friend who early got a shiny bald head. He has two brothers and an uncle, with shiny bald heads, and by the time he was 35, his son had a shiny bald head. In other families the scalp re tains some fuzzy hair, and this type of baldness may appear in generation after generation. It may be that, in some cases, the baldness is due to dandruff, but no one seems to know what dandruff is due to or what can be done to cure it. It may help to keep the scalp clean with fre quent washmgs with tincture of green soap, but I have no scien tific evidence to prove this. - -It is obvious that baldness has something to do with the sex glands. Women seldom lose much of the hair on their head, and they practically never get bald in the way a man does. In terestingly, eunuchs who early in life are castrated do not get bald. Theoretically, then, the taking of large amounts of fe male hormones might prevent baldness, but most men would prefer not to accept this type of treatment for fear of its produc ing some unpleasant effects.
