Many persons tell me that ac
cidentally, during a routine ex
amination with X-rays, a few
gal 1 s t o n e s
were found.
Now the ques
tion is, what
to do? One sur
geon says,
"I see no need
for any rush,
you have nev
er had any
gassy indiges
tion or any
gallstone colics requiring mor
phine. My wife has a few gall
stones and I let her keep them;
I'll take them out only if she
gets to having one colic after an
other or if she gets jaundiced."
But how about the fear of can
cer? Recently I was much cheer
ed by a report made by my good
friends in the statistical depart
ment of the big Metropolitan
Life Insurance company. They
showed that the final mortality
rate of a group of persons with
gallbladder disease whom, years
ago, they accepted for insurance,
has been only slightly higher
than that for their average
"risks." This suggests that can
cer arising in a diseased gallblad
der must be a rare happening:
So rare that one need not take it
into account when deciding
wiiether or not to accept an op
eration for silent and symptom
less gallstones.
Today, after 50 years of expe
rience, I urge operation only on
thoseQ persons with gallstones
who are having colics at fairly
frequent intervals. I fear they
will go on having them until
they are driven to operation, If
they are going to be forced to
accept an operation, they had
better have it performed quickly
before they have had many pain
ful spells, and perhaps have be
come jaundiced.
Causes Improvement
Occasionally, when a person
has a few gallstones and what
looks like a bad heart the re
moval of the stones will cause a
remarkable improvement in the
situation in the chest: Just why,
we doctors cannot always say.
I am distressed whenever I see
a gallbladder removed in the
hope that the operation will cure
sick headaches. In practically ev
ery case the headaches will go
on unchanged. I much hate, also,
to cee a gallbladder removed on
ly because the x-ray man thought
it emptied a bit slowly or it had
perhaps some adhesions around
it. The results of such operations
are almost always nil.
I also hate very much to see a
woman lose her gallbladder
when her symptoms are obvious
ly all due tonervousness, unhap
piness, great worry, a mild psy
chosis or hysteria. In such cases,
even if the gallbladder contains
stones, if these were silent, she
will be no better for the opera
tion. -
Every woman with gallstones
should know that about all they
canroduce in the way of symp
toms are colics, perhaps with
spells of gassy indigestion, and
sometimes some sorenes in the
abdomen under the rib on the
right side in front. Gallstones do
not produce great nervousness
and pains. all over the body.
The stout woman who has gall
stones will behave wisely if she
starts right in and, by reducing,
removes the large pad of fat
which lies over her abdominal
wall. If then she should have to
come to operation the surgeon

will bless her for having made
the operation so much easier for
him to perform, and so much
safer so far as her recovery is
concerned.
Will an operation always cure
trouble due to gallstones? I am
sorry to say that it does not. In
cases in which the gallbladder
and the bile ducts are full of
stones, some tan be left even by
the most skillful and careful sur
geon. In those many cases in
which a probably normal gall
bladder is removed the symp
toms persist, and one can easily
see why.
Many people write asking me
for a diet for gallbladder disease,
but I tell them I do not know of
any. It doesn't seem to make
much difference what a person
eats. Others ask if there isn't
something that will dissolve the
stones, and I have to say that
there is not. Some persons ask
about taking olive oil so as to
pass the stones. This is an old
wives' tale; what passes are little
concretions of soap made out of
the olive oil. They look like gall
stones but they are not.
The Use of Testicular Extract
Many aging men who have lost
sexual interest or potency have
written asking whether they
should try injections of testoster
one or te testicular harmone.
My impression from the scien
tific literature is that such injec
tions seldom do much good. I
just noticed in one of the last
numbers of the Journal of the
American Medical association
the statement by an expert that
he had tried giving testosterone
to a large series of elderly men
with failing sexual powers and
had seen almost no result.
In the cases of both men and
women, the proper reaction to
sexual stimuli seems to be more
a matter of the subconscious
mind than of the glands of inter
nal secretion. This is often shown
