CENTRAL POINT
Merchants' Group Formed
By Mrs. Muriel W. Shortridge
Central Point The Central
Point Merchant's association
held it's January meeting last
Monday. It is an infant organiza
tion, having been in existance
only two months, but it shows
signs of being a strong and help
ful group of community-minded
business people.
At present its membership
consists of about 40 men, rep
resenting 15 firms. A committee
has been named by President
Jim Glenn to recruit every bus
iness in the community. The as
sociation was inaugurated for
the purpose of bringing the town
together as a unit to establish
city-wide promotion.
Don E. Burelson Jr., RMSN,

jointly by the American Legion

over two weeks because of the
illness of her mother, who re
Bides in Shawnee.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Riley, well
known Central Point people, left
last week to make their home in
Houston, Texas.
K. C. Kernmark, local build
er, was named last week by
Mayor Donald E. Faber, as head
of the new emergency rescue
unit, which is to be headquar

last week to determine the ex
press need for such an organiza
tion, with representatives from
Rogue River, Ashland, Medford
and Central Point police and fire
departments attending. Also
present were representatives
from the Southern Oregon Con
servation and Tree Farm associa
tion, the state and federal for
estry service, and others. It is
felt that there is a real need for
a river rescue squad such as
this will be.
The Harlem Globetrotters and
the House of David basketball

Deputy State Fire Marshall
W. P. Noble, Salem, on an in
spection tour of th new Central
Point fire hall and library build
ing, had nothing but praise for
the fine building and modern
equipment. Although not yet
completed, he said it compared
most favorably with other new
ones he has inspected through
out the state. Especially worthy
of mention is the very modern
Circul-Air hose dryer, which
does away with the need of the
old drying tower. As soon as
the building is completed an
open house will be held.
Rome Police Refuse
Sanctuary for Adonis
Rome (U.R) Rome police
told Joe Adonis last night he was
an "undesirable social element"
and sent him back to Monte
marano, his home town.
Adonis, who recently deport
ed himself from the United
States rather than face charges,
slipped into Rome almost un
noticed but was picked up by
police and questioned at head
quarters. They informed him he could
not come to Rome without
specific authorization and hand
ed him a one-way ticket to
Montemarano. They said he
would have to have "good rea
son" to come back. This was
Adonis' first harsh contact with
Italian police since he arrived
Jan. 16 from New York aboard
the luxury liner Conte Bian-camao.
AUTHORIZED by Congress,
Dr. Jonas E. Salk, who devel
oped first successful anti

Virginia Woman Told
To Expect Quadruplets
Richmond, Va. .(U.R) A
Richmond housewife is expect
ing the birth of quadruplets, and
possibly quintuplets this spring,
a physician said today. .
The physician, who asked not
to be identified, said X-rays
show four distinct fetal skele
tons and there is "a chance" that
a fifth may be forming. Birth
is expected in about 10 weeks.
The woman was identified as
Mrs. Richard Shaia, wife of a
Richmond restaurant owner. She
was confined to the Medical
College of Virginia Hospital for
"rest and quiet," her husband
said.
Both the physician and the
husband were reluctant to give
information, saying they did not
want any publicity. Shaia de
clined to say how many children
he and his wife now have. He
said they have "several."
CREDITS FOR CRUISING Trying out the sun deck by the
swimming pool aboard the liner President Cleveland in
San Francisco for a study room are Joanne Copeland
(left) and Sue Fetz. In mid-June the luxury liner will sail
from San Francisco and Los Angeles loaded with eager
college students on a special "adventure study cruise."
While cruising the Orient they'll earn six college credits.
If they study, that is. Who can study if Sue and Joanne
are aboard?

Of Williams1 Support

MEDF.ORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIYK
Washington (U.R) Demo
cratic presidential candidate Ad
lai E. Stevenson today appeared
to have lost the support of Gov.
G. Mennen Williams of Michi
gan unless the former Illinois
governor proposes a "hard-hitting"
program for the Demo
crats. Williams said yesterday he
could not support Stevenson for
the Democratic nomination on
the basis of Stevenson's record
so far. However, he said, how
Stevenson's program shapes up
within the next few months will
determine whether he gets Wil
liams' support.

Knowland Passes Primary
Sen. William F. Knowland (R
Calif.) said at a Manchester,
N.H., news conference he would
not enter New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation
presidential primary-March
13. He said he was
passing the primary because it
was too early and he would not
have a chance to withdraw if
President Eisenhower discloses
before that time whether he will
be a candidate for reelection.
Democratic leaders, headed by
House Leader John W. McCor
mack, accused the Eisenhower
administration of "fumbling the
ball" and "creating confusion in
Washington:" But House GOP
Leader Joseph W. .Martin Jr.,
said the administration is "100
per cent more efficient, able and
decisive" than the Democratic
Truman administration.
Storage Program Hit
Democratic National Chair
man Paul M. Butler called for
a "complete airing of the gi
gantic mess in grain storage
which has been created by the
Eisenhower administration." He
said there is evidence of'gross
mismanagement" of the program.

The divorce was recommend
