MYRTLE WHIPPLE Rogue River The Woman's association met at the Hope Presbyterian church last Thurs daj evening to install new of ficers. The meeting was opend by the singing of the song, "Christ Is the Way." Mrs. Neal Mesman of Grants Pass was the installing officer. Those obligated were Mrs. Lee Miller, president; Mrs. Robert Worrall, vice-president and pro gram chairman; Mrs. W. F. Spears Jr., recording secretary, and Edna Fulton, treasurer. Mrs. Jeff Irwin was installed as spiritual life chairman; Mrs. Lewis Robinson, sunshine and hospitality chairman; Mrs. Ever ett Bowers, sewing; Mrs. Ernest Sandeen, ways and means. At a business meeting conducted by Mrs. Miller the group decided to cancel the annual dinner. Com mittee reports for the year past were presented. Mrs. A. E. Mil ler spoke briefly on mission ac tivities. Refreshments were served by Mrs. A. E. Miller and Mrs. Everett Bowers. The meeting op ened with a covered dish din ner at 6:30 p.m. Carl Christen son, president, had charge of the meeting. After a short bus iness meeting a program was enjoyed. Miss Jean Stiehl gave two Hawaiian dances. Mrs. Ger trude Freiden gave a 45-minute talk on Hawaii. She showed some pictures of her home and the different trees, and places there. A birthday dinner was given Sunday by Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Miller in honor of their son-in-law, Jim Rhoten. Other 'guests were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rhoten and Mrs. Jim Rhoten of -Wimer, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Owen of Grants Pass and Mr. and Mrs. Don Haynes of Medford and Russell Miller. News has been received of the death of Mr. John X. Dunlap at Fallon, Nev. Mr. Dunlap was a former resident of Rogue River and was the brother-in-law of Mrs. Claude Hilger. Mr. and Mrs. James Whipple were dinner guests last Friday of Mr. and Mrs. John Breeding. There will be a March of Dimes dinner at the Live Oak Grange hall the evening of Feb. 4. The Laurel Garden club will meet Feb. 8 at the home of Mrs. Henry Bonney on Evans creek road east. A pink and blue shower was held Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 24, in honor of Mrs. Billie Mil ton at the home of Mrs. Elmer Milton with Mrs. Ralph Milton as co-hostess. Mrs. Milton receiv ed many gifts. Mrs. Lewis Robinson was ta ken to the hospital Wednesday. A baby named Jerry Wayne was born at the Memorial hos pital in Salem to Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Hargitt. The young man weighed 8 pounds. The father is stationed at Heidelburg, Ger many. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hargitt of this city, Mr. and Mrs. Allan McGreg ory Sr., former residents of Rogue River, are moving from Anchorage, Alaska, to Valdez, Alaska, where Mrs. McGregory has accepted a teaching position in the Valdez High school. A potluck dinner was held Jan. 19 at the Wimer Community church in honor of Miss Mabel Tyrell of Rogue River. Miss Ty rell has spent the past five years as a missionary in Africa and is now home on furlough. She is serving under the Sudan Interior Mission. Word comes from Grants Pass fof the serious illness of Teed Cardin. He ha many friends here who regret to hear of his illness. The Cardins were former resi dents here where they ran the Brick store on corner of Main and Broadway. Mrs. Juanita Scott was a din ner guest at the Neil Thompson home on Walker road in Grants Pass. It was the birthday of Mrs. Scott's young granddaughter, Lynn Thompson. PHOENIX Couple Back From Long Trip By MRS. WILLIAM KNIGHT Phoenix Mr. and Mrs. An drew Stevens returned Jan. 18 after being gone more than seven weeks. In New York they visited Lt. and Mrs. Gordon B. Skinner, their daughter and son-in-law. Lieutenant Skinner is a jet pilot stationed near New York. While there they attended a Broadway musical. At New London, Conn., they visited their son "Buzz," who is stationed at the submarine base there. In Principio Furnace, Md., they spent some time with Lt. and Mrs. John Calkins, and at Bel grade, Me., they visited an uncle of Mrs. Stevens, Ernest Merrow. They spent a few days in Washington, D. C, then started home by way of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and stopped to visit friends in New Orleans. In Arizona, they visited a brother of Stevens, Sgt. George F. Stev ens, at Ft. Huachuca. Two families in the commun ity, have recent additions. little Laura Annette came to live with Dr. and Mrs. Paul Rutter, Church, st., and Barton Reid is the new son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Caster, Hilsinger rd. Mr. and Mrs. John Klassen returned Jan. 19 after spending a month in California. They vis ited with a daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Russ in San Bernadino. Mrs. Russ is the former Rosalie Klassen who is a graduate of Phoenix High and is remembered as a former yell leader. In Upland they visit ed another daughter and . her family, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gard ner, the former Florence May Klassen. Klassen spent a week of hydro - matic transmission training at a school in Burbank. They visited with a sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Mar ion Goosen, in Wilmington. Mrs. Arthur Hunter of Cent ral Point spent the day Jan. 19 with Mrs. Dorothy Thompson. Word was received from Up land, Wash., last week by Leslie Feris of the death of his uncle. The Feris family was vacation ing in Phoenix Ariz:, at the time and friends from here tele phoned the news to them. Mrs. Olen Barlow and her nephew Dick Smith, Ashland, celebrated their birthdays Jan. 13 in Ashland at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Smith. Mrs. Robert Furry has been quite ill the past week. Frank Lovett recently cele brated his birthday by having a few friends in for the evening. Mrs. Alice Bjork, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Hannah Vick, of the Jackson County farm, re turned Jan. 22 from visiting her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kane, of Eugene, and a shopping tour in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Clarke are home after visiting Mrs. Clarke's son Bill in San Francisco. Cairo, 111. (U.R A Canadian goose at least 13 years old was killed by a hunter near here. The old bird was banded in 1942 at the Jack Miner refuge at Kingsville, Ont. He was leading a flock when Guy J ones shot him down. SAVAGE CREEK-ROGUE RIVER elsons Visiting Hawaii By CHRISTINA H. MARSHALL Savage' Creek-Rogue River Mr. and Mrs. Nelson of South Pacific Highway 99 are vacation in Hawaii. According to a card received from them by Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Smiley of Smiley's Superette, they are having a wonderful time. The Nelsons expect to be away for several weeks. Roy . Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Larson, will celebrate his eighth birth on Tuesday, Jan. 31. He is being honored with a birthday party. Ronnie Babb of Savage Creek is home ill with the mumps. Jim Horn of Savage Creek, who has business interests in Tulelake and Crescent City, Calif., left last week for an African Safari. He and Mabry Ogle, associated with the Chip board plant in Grants Pass and who has lumber interests in northern California, will be ac companied by Walt Fisher of Eureka and Richard Buffing ton of Gold Beach. The party left by air from Medford. They will first fly to San Francisco, New York and thence to London, England. From London they go to Cairo, Egypt, and expect to tour the Nile area before flying to Uganda to begin an auto tour of the Belgian Congo. The group will then fly to Nariobi to outfit for a four week Safari in search of big game, which they hope to capture with both gun and camera. They expect to return home in early March.- Bob Wedlock of Bob's Texaco at the 99 highway and Rogue River Junction has been down with the flu for .a couple of days. Bob Williamson has been run ning the station for Wedlock during his illness. Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Grub er who operate the Tiny Spot Cafe at the 99 highway and Rogue River Junction, will leave the first of next month for Long Beach, Calif. Gruber's father recently died there. They are going there to take care of his mother, who is an invalid. Cassie Golding will run the Cafe for the Grubers while they are away. Gail's Market at the 99 High way and Rogue River Junction re-opened for business last week. The store has been remodeled and re-stocked. WATSON Shady Cove-Trail A food sale for the benefit of the March of Dimes will be held Saturday, Feb. 4,-at the Shady Cove clean ers. Members of Our Lady of Fatima club of Shady Cove-Trail are the sponsors. Next regular meeting of the club will be held the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the home of Mrs. Dick Bartuss, Shady Cove. Mrs. Ernest Segessenman of Shady Cove is in Reno to see her daughter and- husband, Mr. and Mrs. Chet Pfluke. She is expect ed back the end of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Miller and family have moved to Mt. Shasta, Calif., where he was transferred for the California Oregon Power company. Mrs. Fred Morgan of Trail un derwent major surgery Monday at Sacred Heart hospital and at last report was convalescing nicely, and expects to return home this week end. Ronald Curren was brought home by Mercy Flight from the hospital at Gridley, Calif., and is now confined to Sacred Heart in Medford. Mrs. Glenn Anderton of Trail, another local resident who is confined to Sacred Heart hospital, is expecting to leave the hospital for her home this week end. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Stewart and family of Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada, are visiting Stewart's sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Art Swanson of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Proctor of Shady Cove wish to thank the members of Shady Cove fire de partment, neighbors and friends for the assistance given them when a fire occurred at their home Dec. 22. The Proctors were visiting in Los Angeles at the time. Agnes Warrior, daughter of Mrs. Lloyd Oliver of Trail is re turning soon from Tulsa, Okla., where she has been visiting with her grandmother. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Oliver of Trail and Agnes went back to Tulsa shortly be fore Christmas to attend the fu neral of Mrs. Oliver's brother, and Agnes stayed on for a visit when the Olivers returned home. Bill Triplett of the Triplett Berry farm, St. Helens, Ore., is visiting with his sister and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Barr. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Wilkinson and family have bought a home between Central Point and Gold Hill and moved from their place in Shady Cove over this last week end. Jack Pfeifer, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Pfeifer of Shady Cove, has accepted a position as an instructor of ma thmetics and industrial arts at the John Muir Junior High school at San Lean dro, Calif. 4 Mjrs. Claude Close of Big Butte creek, Trail, has been ill for the past several weeks with flu. - Members , of Steelhead Post 6881, VFW, have been challeng ed by members of the Shady Cove-Trail Lions to a basketball game as a benefit for the March of Dimes. This will be played at the Shady Cove school, gym on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. The sympathy of the commu nities is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Anton Anderson of Trail on the passing of their daughter, Mrs. Doris Edwards, at a Med ford hospital Thursday. Also to the brothers of Mrs. Edwards, Roy, Ray, Arleigh and Gene. Anderson of Trail mud their families. Mr. and Mrs. Buster Akirig of Shady Cove have bought a hom in back of Earl Warren's Saw shop and next to Eldon Grow's station in Shady Cove. Dr. and Mrs. John Burdell and children have moved to Lebanon, Ore., where he has bought an optometry practice, Dr. Burdell, the son of Mrs. Clyde Stafford of Trail, receiv ed his degree in optometry from Pacific college at Forest Grove in 1955.
