o O o EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) Back Stairs: Adams Likes Fling With Boys By MERRIMAN SMITH UP White House Writer Washington Backstairs at the White House: It turns out that Sherman Adams, the assistant to the Pres ident, likes to get out with the boys occasionally in a manner belying his legendary flinty ex terior. Adams was the "fall guy" this week for the Washington chap ter of the circus Saints and Sin ners. He crushed from a high level farm conference at the White House to attend the lunch time hilarities at the Statler Hotel. And what was awaiting the august New Englander when he . arrived? A fetching cooch dancer who twirled her tassles clock wise, as well as counter-clockwise. ams, however, by -passed the hip-swinging sideshow and made straight for the head table where for two hours he was 'roasted, basted and barbequed by club members in a series of skits. The point of one skit was that the Eisenhower administration had figured a way out of the farm price dilemma to sell the government's mountain of sur plus agricultural commodities to the Ford Foundation. Harry Herschfield, the belov- ed New York humorist, cartoon ist and perennial toastmaster, swears this is a true story about President Eisenhower. In fact, Harry says the President told him personally that the tale is an accurate one: Deefz Formally Files for Senator Salem (U.R) Elmer Deetz, Canby, Ore., dairy farmer, for mally filed yesterday for the Republican nomination for U. S. Senator. Deetz, ,known as the "gallon jug" milk dealer, won a cam paign to repeal state milk con trols In the last general election. He said he would seek the nomination regardless of who else might run. Gov. Paul Pat terson is considered a possible candidate for nomination. The Canby dairyman said he decided ti run after Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) attacked the new farm program of President Eis enhower. Injunction Continued Agaisf Fred Meyer Portland (U.R) A temporary injunction restraining Fred Mey er Inc., from selling Sunbeam Corporation products at below listed fair trade prices was con tinued by Circuit Judge James R. Bain here yesterday. The order also prohibits the chain store from advertising the products at below the manufac turer's prices. Judge Bain first issued the mporary injunction last week when Sunbeam filed suit seek ing $150,000 damages and a permanent injunction. The company was required to post a $25,000 bond to cover damages Fred Meyer might suf fer by reason of the restraint. The proper pronounciation of the word 'schedule' (the custom ary British manner). Where in the world did you learn such atrocious pronunciation?" "I learned it back in Kansas in grammer school," said Gen eral Eisenhower. Reporters and photographers assigned to cover the "Salute to Eisenhower" dinner here last week at the Sheraton Park Ho tel are still burning at the Re publicans who ran the affair, the hotel and anybody who had any thing to do with the dinner. The newsmen were invited to dinner. Some of the ladies and gentlemen went home and put on black tie and evening dresses, but when they appeared in the ball room and went to the tables designated on their tickets, wait ers said they had been instructed to serve them no food. The silverware, even the wa ter glasses, were removed. By. this time, the proceedings were under way and the reporters and cameramen assigned to the story were stuck with their work. Finally, someone pro duced a tray of cheese sand wiches, some cold shrimp and coffee in another room. Some of the town's most dig nified columnists are still screaming. For it has always been our experience that folks with the wherewithal to buy any car they choose are apt to be the choosiest of all. So it seems quite clear that the marked and increasing preference for Roadmaster is in the fineness of the car itself.
