IS-rtDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE C of C Reviews Some promotional Schemes variety of different promo tional and selling schemes have started operation in Jackson county, it was reported today. Some of them are of an out-and-out "racket" variety but dif ficult to check and curb. Others are quasi-legal, while still others are entirely within the law but have aspects which makes the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce caution residents about them. In some promotional opera tion: the promoters, working for entirely legitimate purposes tfflte a high percentage of the gross rSteipts. Don McNeil, manager of the chamberpsaid the American buil ding induftry has launched a promotion campaign "Opera tional Home Improvement" which will be conducted through "the year. He said the reputable industry is undertaking the promotional campaign for peo ple remodeling operations which may be necessary for homes. NBBB Recommendations But McNeil also said the Na tional Better .Business bureau j has furnished a set of recom mendations for persons who plan home improvements. He said he would discuss the recommenda tions with any interested county resident. He urged participation in "Op erational Home Improvement" but suggested that residents con fine their dealings to reputable firms. McNeil noted that a recent National Better Business bureau bulletin warned against some promoters of "display houses," roofers, bait advertising of storm windows and doors, furnace re pairmen, and problems arising from using certain types of mas tic paint. The bulletin noted that some promoters of "display houses" approach home owners and ex plain that in the company plans to start remodeling operations in ,the community. 'Demonstration Job' The bulletin noted that some promoters of "display houses" approach home owners and ex plain that their company plans to start remodeling operations in the neighborhood to show BUY THE NEW Quick G E AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC Water Healer Wash a Load of Clothes EVERY HOUR 5 -All Day Long- ONLY $5.00 A MONTH NOTHING DOWN HOME APPLIANCE 115 EAST' MAIN r Authorized Dealer GENERAL ELECTRIC Water Heaters Wore I Hot vSaer I CUTS YOUR FEED COSTS PER DOZEN EGSS ' iiii nmm I prospects before actual remodel ing activities start. An offer for new roofing or siding for "less than cost" is presented along with a commission for each job resulting from showing the "dis play house" to customers. M. Neil said the promoter ac tua; f has no intention of using the house for display purposes, and the actual cost to the home owner is exorbitant for an in ferior job. He mentioned that "itinerant" roofers park trucks near a home, tell home owners they have completed a job nearby and have material remaining. They offer to repair the roof at a small price to dispose of 'mater ial, he said. McNeil added that many times such projects often damage roofs for excessive pric es. Residents should avoid "bait advertising" for storm windows and doors, McNeil said. Adver tisements, he said, claim prices ranging from $7.95 upward to more than $10, but when a com pany representative approaches prospective customer, he points out that such windows or doors are inferior, and offers a "switch" to one which costs up to 545. Furnace 'Repairmen' McNeil said the furnace re pair field-many offers arise at tempting to sell new furnaces where they are not needed. The "repairman" makes an "inspec tion" in the owner's home, and "discovers" it cannot be repair ed. McNeil said usually the fur nace is dismanteled and "re pairmen" are not willing to re assemble it because it is "worn out." The chamber also warned about "mastic paints" which are advertised to have a high de gree of permanences and depen dability, but which many times have been known to chip, crack, discolor, peel or blister soon aft er application. McNeil pointed out, however, that such itinerant promoters in almost all cases are from out side the area in which they op erate. McNeil said the Chamber of fice on South Riverside ave., will be cooperative in discussing recommendations by the Nation al Better Business bureau con cerning firms and home repairs. Magazine Salesmen Magazine salesmen operating in the Medf ord area are believ ed to be misrepresenting them selves as being related to Med ford citizens, it was reported today. One such case is that of a young lady who represents herself as either a daughter or a niece of Postmaster Moore Hamilton. ' ; "To the best of my knowledge I have no niece here who is selling magazines," Hamilton said, "and my daughter, is ' now in Eugene. I am certain that if any of my relatives were selling magazines and' using my name as reference, that they would have so informed me." ' McNeil said instances of itin erant promotion schemes have increased since the Rogue Valley Memorial hospital fund raising campaign started. He said in stances have been reported of solicitations by persons who are believed to be members of mag azine sales crews posing as col lectors for worthy causes. Telephone solicitations, Mc Neil said, have increased in re cent months. He pointed out that the chamber never ap proves telephone solicitations "regardless of the worthiness of the cause." McNeil said many telephone solicitations are made by pro fessional fund raisers who re ceive a percentage split with the sponsoring agent, which in many cases might be church or veter ans groups or other organizations. Edmund Dens more first took an active inter est in what makes a clock tick. It started him off on a career that's kept him busy for more than three-score years. Densmore, whose father oper ated a clock repair shop in near by Springwater for some 50 years, is one of the compara tively few clock-fixers left around the country who are able to turn out and replace parts in old-fashioned timepieces as well as the up-to-date kind. The elderly craftsman says that nearly every week an an tique clock of a kind no longer manufactured reaches his shop for repair. Then he usually has to go to work improvising. " ,The clock of which he is fond est is an old wooden timepiece owned by a Corning, N.Y., resi dent. It gets his best care. The clock dates back to 1798 and has a wooden mechanism, instead of brass. The weights are made of scrap metal, lead being a some what scarce commodity in the colonies in those days, and the face bears a picture of the Am erican eagle and 14 stars. Densmore contends that a wooden clock will give nearly as satisfactory service as the mo dern kind, provided it receives good care. While he loves the antique makes, he admits, with reluctance, "that the modern ones are' the more reliable time-keepers. Prof. David Riesman said political science is on the decline because the study pf the state in isolation is no longer a fertile field of research. A new tvDe of sDecalist is tending to replace Dure nolitical scientists, Riesman told an in ternational audience of fellow social scientists here recently. inese specialists are students of political behavior rather than of institutions, he said, and they take their methods from psy chology and sociology.
