Oh icago seen Outbreak of ' -Ager Kills Wolf Pack' Policeman in Latest Juvenile Terrorism Chicago U.R) A gun packing teen-ager shot and kill ed a veteran policeman Wednes day night in Chicago's latest outbreak of "wolf pack" terror ism. It was the second time a Chi cago teen-ager had killed with in 24 hours. At the very time that Police man Lyons Kelleher was being gunned dovn in a South Side night club, two teen-agers were surrendering on a street corner for the fatal stabbing of a youth Tuesday night. Within the past week, juve nile "wolf pack" gangs have slugged a teacher in a school room corridor and swaggered along sidewalks, attacking any one who caught their fancy. Mayor Richard J. Daley called an emergency meeting of top of ficials Wednesday to stop the bloodshed. Kelleher, a veteran of 23 years on the police force, was killed during a routine check up at a Negro district jazz spot which was reported to be rendezvous for narcotic addicts. Trail of Blood j His slayer, identified as a 19 year-old Negro youth, escaped while another policeman, badly wounded, emptied his gun at him. A trail of blood on the sidewalk indicated the killer had been hit at least once. Kelleher, 53, and his partner, William Derrig, 38, entered, the Boulevard Colonial Room at the Boulevard Hotel about 11:15 p.m. The night spot was filled .by about 25 hot music fans who were waiting for a jazz band to strike up. Derrig went into the room while Kelleher stood at the door. Suddenly, a youth broke from the bar and tried to get past Kelleher. The policeman grabbed him and said "where are you going?" Th youth twisted away and tome up with a sub-nosed re volver. Kelleher drew almost simul taneously, but he was too late he youth fired four shots into fi chest and then whirled on derrig with a shot which pierced $is right hand. I felt like a trapped animal. And so did Sir Laurence Olivier, whom they had follow ed to my address. They never would have be lieved, even if we had sworn on a stack of Bibles, the reason for our lunching together. The truth is a simple and sad story of a "Gal Friday" who once worked for me back in the- 20s and 30s. Later, she went to work for the Oliviers. Hoffman had been named as the youth who stabbed and kill ed 20-year-old William McNeff in a street brawl Tuesday night. Deputy Police Commissioner Kyron Phelan said a- man called his home at 11 p.m. and told him Hoffman and Fernandez were waiting, to surrender on a street corner. Phelan drove with Chief of Detectives Patrick Deeley to the corner and found the sloppily- dressed, -bushy-haired .youths. They did not resist and Hoff man admitted the stabbing, Phe- nandez, both 19, surrendered to lan said. Cahill Conviction Upheld by Court Salem U.R) -The Oregon Su preme Court has upheld the conviction of Otto W. Cahill of Delake on a charge of conversion of public funds. 1 Cahill appealed after he was convicted in a Polk county Cir cuit Court trial on a change of venue. He was a commissioner and secretary "of the Taft-Nels-cott-Delake water district from which he received $750, suppos edly to buy water pipe which he said he could get on favorable' terms from the government as a disabled veteran. I His defense was that he had j returned the money to the treas-j urer of the district who died a few days thereafter. The state claimed the treasurer's signature on the receipt was a forgery. Certain signatures of the treas urer which were genuine but which had not been admitted or treated as genuine by Cahill, were placed in evidence and Ca hill contended that this consti tuted error. Another Bad Year Seen for Farmers Corvallis (U.R) M. D. Thomas, Oregon State College agricultural economist yesterday predicted that Oregon farmers faced another bad year for in come! Thomas said the state's farmers may make only a little more than half what they made in 1951. The economist said that the "soil bank" plan proposed by the. Department of Agriculture would bring only long range benefits to the farms and that the only farmers who would benefit immediately would be seed growers who would find an expanded market for seeds to plant the soil banks. He said farm surpluses built up in past years would continue to depress prices down this year. The soil banks would take 10 to 20 per cent of the nation's crop land out of production.
