'Protection' Money
Demanded of Student
Portland CU.R) Police said to
day a high school student was
threatened with bodily harm un
less he paid $5 "protection" to
two classmates.
Officers picked up two teen
aged boys and turned them over
to county juvenile authorities.
Officers said the "extortion" vic
tim had been in a fight with
one ot.the two boys some time
ago and that revenge apparently
was the motive. The two teen
agers were arrested in the act
of accepting the money, accord
ing to juvenile officers..'
At the same time, juvenile au
thorities said arrests of young
people had been climbing here
with 171 taken into custody so
far this month.
Innocent Plea Made
On Income Tax Evasion

ners in the Standley Brothers
Logging Company, Powers, Ore.,
pleaded innocent yesterday to
charges they evaded federal in
come tax payments in 1949, 1950
and 1951.
They are Noble C. Standley,
52, Camas Valley, and Robert
Wilbur Merchen, 39, and James
A. Adamek, 42, both of Powers.
The firm's former bookkeeper,
Mrs. Nellie J. Hollenbeck, 55,
San' Diego, Calif., has admitted
falsifying books and is awaiting
sentencing.
U.S. Judge Gus J. Solomon
set trial for the trio for Medford,
probably in March or April.

Jan. 19 featured Dr. Arthur
Kreisman, professor of English
literature at Southern Oregon
college as speaker at the annual
presentation of incentive awards
meeting. The Eagle Point High
school band under the direction
of Charles Martin furnished mu
sic. E. K. Ricker, manager, pre
sided and introduced H. J. Heit
kemper, personnel officer, who
in turn introduced Dr. Kreisman.
Ricker announced cash awards
for accepted suggestions. Eleven
civil service employees submit
ted plans which were approved
and adopted. Cash awards
ranged from $10 to $155. Awards
went to Charles Goold, Harold
Adams, Kenneth Black, Melvin
Lewis, Frank Richardson, Wil
liam Harter, Walter Wills, Gus
Boen, Paul Thelan, Clarence
Bryan, Mrs. Enid Brown and
Miss Lilah McCullough.
