SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, January 24, 195S Nevada Police in Intensive For Vicious Suspect in Kiflin unf- Las Vegas, Ne v. OJ.R) Po lice, sheriff's deputies and the FBI staged an intensive man hunt today for a vicious gunman suspected of murdering a mo torist in New Mexico and pos sibly killing another motorist who is missing. Authorities threw up road blocks for the unidentified gun man who was almost captured last night when he was stopped by a traffic officer for speeding. ! The gunman wrecked a car in. escaping and also held a man at gunpoint to steal a change of clothes. Possibly Indiana Escapee Officers feared the gunman might be an Indiana jail escapee who had been sentenced to death for the murder of a gas station attendant and for killing five other persons in a "Chinese ex ecution" by forcing them to kneel so he could shoot them in the back of the head. The gunman's description, of ficers said, fitted that of Leslie Irvin, who escaped from a Princeton, Ind., jail Jan. 19. Missing and feared dead was Kenneth Short, North Holly (yvood, Calif ., who bought a car in Flint, Mich., recently and pre- ! sumably was driving it home : when he disappeared. The car ; wrecked last night belonged to Short, officers said. . Motorist Killed Deputies said the possible slayer of Short was believed to also be the murderer of motor ist Ralph Henderson Rainey: Santa Monica, Calif., at Albu querque, N.M., Jan. 9. Officers said a man passed through a New Mexico roadblock after the Rainey shooting and headed to ward Las Vegas. The gunman, when stopped here by a traffic officer for speeding, showed identification papers of Donald Gildway, whose Las Vegas home was bur glarized recently. Instead, the suspect out ran " the officer and wrecked Short's car. Progress Reported in Weslinghouse Strike Pittsburgh '(U.R) Negotia tions in the marathon. Westing house Electric Corp. strike, now in its 100th day, resumed today with an announcement by the company president that "some progress" has been made. The violence-marked Westing house dispute is ' the nation's longest major strike since the 112-day Chrysler Corp. walkout in 1950. The progress report by West inghouse President Gwilyn A. Price was one of the few opti mistic notes sounded since the Sfrst of two unions walked out last Oct. 17. It came in reply to a letter from John M. Car mody, chairman of the 17-mem-ber Nation Citizen's committee formed Sunday in Washington. "I feel that true collective bargaining now is underway with the International Union of Electrical Workers on the basis for negotiations and that some progress has been made," Price said. The gunman then broke into the home of Loren Tracy; who was alone, and held him at gun point. He changed into one of Tracy's shirts. .The shirt he dis carded was later identified as Short's. It was stained with blood from injuries the gunman gs crackup of suffered in t Short's car. The suspect also gave one of Short's business cards to Tracy. He apparently took a liking to Tracy because he gave him a watch which also turned out to be Short's. Elizabeth To Decide On Polio Vaccine Use ' London 'U.R) Queen Eliza beth II alone will decide "like any other mother" whether Prince Charles and Princess Anne will be inoculated with Britain's newly-developed anti polio serum, palace sources said Monday. A London newspaper had sug gested that vaccination of the royal children would do more to sell British parents on the vaccine than "any amount of ministry of health propaganda. Senate Starts Work On Farm Measures Washington U.R) The Sen ate Agriculture committee to day began drafting a bill to put more money into the pockets of the nation's financially-squeezed farmers. The Democratic - controlled committee had two immediate problems to solve: Decide on how to finance the soil bank program proposed by President Eisenhower. Decide on what to do about the demand for a "compromise" price support plan made by Committee . Chairman Allen J. Ellender (D.-La.). Ellender wants to support some top quality crops at 90 per cent of parity. The problem is finding a yardstick to define quality. The administration wants to keep the support program flex ible.
