Marathon efforts to settle a 99-day nation wide strike against Westing house Electric Corp. continued here today. Secrecy surrounded the nego tiations but it was learned that top negotiators met in a side caucus to discuss the current bargaining. . Reports said the meeting be tween Westinghouse Vice-President R. D. Blasier and James B. Carey, president of the Interna tional Union of Electrical Work ers, was conducted by Federal Mediator John R. Murray. Murray declined to comment on the report of the momentary break in full-scale negotiations. Murray said he called a meet ing Sunday in order to "clear up some things that have back logged." He also killed rumors of an impending settlement with a terse comment that there have been no major developments to wards a settlement Alexander Korda Dies of Heart Attack London (J.R) Sir Alexander Korda, British film magnate, died of a heart attack today. Korda, 62, was born in Tur keve, Hungary. He was the former husband of movie actress Merle Oberon. Their marriage was dissolved and he married Alexandra Irene Boycun in 1953. His first wife was Marie Farkas whom he married in 1919. Korda was chairman of Lon don Film Production, Ltd., and Alexander Korda Film Produc tions. He founded the first com pany in 1932 in London and the second seven years later. He was knighted in 1942. Korda, after an early career as a newspaperman in Budapest, became a movie producer in Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Holly wood and Paris. ' Roseburg Polio Vaccine.. Dr. Anderson said that since the inoculation program started, druggists had distributed 1600 shots of the vaccine. More ship ments were 'expected soon, he said. Monday, January 23, 1S5S Report Shows 7 Per j Cent City Tax Hike Eugene A report from the bureau of municipal research and service at the University of Oregon shows that the total of property tax levies within in corporated cities for the current fiscal year is seven per cent higher than last year. The total of $80,574,686 is the combined property tax levies of counties, school districts and cities on property located within the limits of incorporated cities. Of this total, $22,902,744, or 28.4 per cent, is levied by the cities for city purposes. The report, points out that the property tax continues to be the backbone of local government revenue structure in Oregon and produced more revenue than any other state or local tax. Total of assessed value of tax able property within cities this year is $1,110,148,194, which is a 4.8 per cent increase over last year. This figure is 54.9 per cent of the $2,020,796,537 state total. Property tax levies within cities comprise 56.4'' per -cent of the state total of $142,911,845. Sheriff's officers said the car landed upright and the students were able to escape through waist-deep water. Shortly after wards, the car was swept 75 feet downstream by strong currents.
