In such cases the doctor will i m m e d iately have the wom an's blood tested for syphilis, pre ferably with several different technics. If all these tests come out "negative," indicating that the woman never got syphilis from her husband; if she never had any symptoms of syphilis; if she never had a series of mis carriages, or if she has healthy children, she should take heart and stop worrying. She should try to put the fear of infection right out of her mind and not let it in again. She should know that syphilis is not inherited as epilepsy can be, and hence it cannot suddenly show up in a healthy middle-aged son of hers; and it is never going to show up in his chil dren. Syphilis is an infection, like measles or mumps: An in fection due to a tiny spiral germ, called a spirochete. If a young man with active syphilis in its early stages marries, he is very likely to infect his wife. Often she has no symptoms, and hence fails to appreciate her danger and the danger to any children she may try to bear. If she gets syphilis, her children are like ly to get syphilis from her, and perhaps most of them will die of the disease in her womb. The typical story we doctors used to hear wasthat of the woman who had several miscarriages and then a still-born child. When a child of hers, with syphilis, succeeded in being born alive, he (or she) was likely to show certain signs such as clouded eyes, with poor vision. Becoming Scarce Fortunately, today, with the blood tests that reveal syphilis, and the excellent treatments with penicillin, we physicians are not seeing much of this sort of thing. It is years since, in my own practice, I have seen young people with syphilis contracted from their parents. When this happens, as it com monly does, the , woman must not keep worrying herself sick; she must not keep going to doc tor after doctor to get more blood tests, and she must not spend the rest of her days get ting herself treated unnecessar ily for syphilis. Stiff Treatment Course As I said a while ago, if she should be one of those women who was early infected by her husband; never had any symp toms, and perhaps in her 50s or 60s was found to have a posi tive blood test for syphilis, then she should put herself in the hands of a physician, expert in this field of medicine. He may give a stiff course of treatment and then, if she has a normal spinal fluid and no signs of in jury to her nervous system, he may say, "Go now and try to forget it. Obviously, taken with the context, this does not sug gest any thought of disease; it suggests to me only the idea of trie sin of worshipping idols Actually, I know of no disease that exemplifies this statement: Certainly no known venereal disease does it. Insanity and epilepsy and many nervous dis eases are inherited down through many generations, but today we physicians are sure that these troubles have nothing to do with sins of the parents. The Marines planned over night stops in Woodburn and Oregon City. They will move as donations come in. State police will keep in touch with them.
