Dated and first published this 19th day of January. 1956. Verna M. Thatcher. Administratrix going to do, but you can never count on the other fellow. The best way to stay alive is to stay alert. I've been driving a bus for 22 years and I've never had an ac cident. I'm cautious and lucky. I've had my share of close calls. Everyone does nowadays, -no matter what, how or where he drives. I drive for a living, not for pleasure. As a matter of fact, I Finland Candidate Friend of Russia Helsinki, Finland (U.R) Premier Urho Kekkonen, a friend of Soviet Russia, emerged today from Finland's presidential elections as the nation's most powerful political figure. He is almost certain to be elected pres ident next month. Kekkonen's Agrarian Party gained the most votes and the most seats in the electoral body which will name a president Feb. 15 on the basis of final un official results from the two-day elections. Kekkonen captured votes which' heretofore had gone to the Communist Peoples Demo crats, But he was virtually as sured of winning support of the Communist electors because of his proved ability to get along with neighboring Russia. The results showed the Agrar ians winning 89 seats of the 300 in the Electoral Assembly. The Communists, who finished third in the six-party race, captured 57 seats. Kekkonen is almost certain to pick up the additional five votes necessary for the 151 vote ma jority to be named president. Juho Paasikivi, 85, present president and most revered statesman in Finland, is not a candidate for re-election al though the Russians asked him to run because of his friendli ness to Moscow. don't think there is such a thing as pleasure driving any more. . I'd rather take a bus out than drive my own car. There are just too many cars on the road these days and too many care less drivers. It seems to me there are an awful lot of people driv ing cars who shouldn't be al lowed behind the wheel. They're phsically, mentally or emotion ally unfit. You'd be surprised at the num ber of hard-of-hearing drivers I encounter. I blow my horn to pass and the car ahead doesn't mcve, as if the driver doesn't hear. So I turn on my lights and he moves over. Prefers Women Speaking of passing, I would rather pass a woman driver than a man. A woman might not han dle the car as expertly as her husband but as a rule she's more cautious. Lots of times she has her children with her and may be it's her maternal instinct. We hear a lot about the causes of accidents carelessness, drunken driving, speeding and downright selfishness. A little common courtesy would go a long way toward cutting down the death toll. But there are some specific things, too. I don't think the average driver uses his rear view mirror or his side mirror often enough. Lots of cars don't even have side mirrors. Com mercial drivers like me learn that mirrors are as important as the windshield. - Power steering is a big help sometimes. If you have to hit the shoulder of the road, power steering makes it a lot safer and easier. Check Shoulder I think motorists should check the shoulder now and then so if they have to go out on it they'll know what to expect. I drive the Chicago-Toledo run, 242 miles, and it's mighty comforting to hit the . Ohio Turnpike. The shoulders are wider than my bus. I'm dubious" about automatic gear shifts.' I think you can stop faster with, the old standard shift, using the motor to brake the car and fanning the brakes at the same time. ' A lot has been said pro and con about the horsepower they're building into cars these days. It enables you to pass more quickly but it might en courage some people to pass when they shouldn't. You have to respect all that power. The scenicruiser bus I drive has 300 horsepower. i. I'm awfully careful with it. American movie theatres sell about 60,000,000 admissions each week. DOLLAR NOSEDIVES Buenos Aires !U.R) Foreign exchange speculators took a beating Tuesday when the Amer ican dollar nose-dived in the free market from . Monday's all-time high of 45.75 pesos per dollar. The exchange dipped to 38.50 pesos in a few hours. The drop appeared due to a buyers "strike" against the record quo tation. For several hours, brok ers would only sell and refused to buy dollars. VETERAN CORNER Madison, Wis. U.R) The Wis consin Legislative Reference Li brary says Hartman F. Stohr of Buffalo County has been coroner longer than any one else in Wis consin. But it isn't sure how long.
