Jl' Gloria Swanson Summons Italian Cook To Prepare Lunch for Movie Director By GLORIA SWANSON Written for United Press Rome King Vidor, director of "The Big Parade" and "War And Peace," came with his wife and three other Americans for lunch. Thinking they might en joy an American menu for a change, I summoned my wonder ful Italian cook. She speaks no English and my Italian is limited to a small num ber of words so I employ pidgin English and pantomine, at which I excel because of my silent pic ture training and drawing pic tures. Wanted Clear Soup For a first course, I wanted a clear soup instead of the eternal pasta, which means any starch dish from rice, spaghetti, noo dles, macaroni ad infinitum. With no English-Italian diction ary handy, I made a stab, with my cold cup of tea, at giving an Imitation of someone eating soup, rude noises and all. She muttered something that sounded like it should mean soup so I went on to the second course. I thought a leg of lamb would be different so my own leg was used for the demonstra tion, pointing to the thigh and, of course, making a sound like a lamb or was it a goat? Her face brightened and she pointed to a flock of sheep in the painting hanging on the wall. Bravo! All is well. I drew a beautiful picture of asparagus. The dessert I left to her, ex cept to throw in the word "cioc colato." Americans wouldn't care what it was as long as it was that flavor or had chocolate on it. - Well, I don't have the slight est notion why pasta replaced the soup course, I refused to believe the fault lay in my act ing. But it did and there it was! Leg of Lamb Plural The leg of lamb turned out to the plural legs of lamb. Unlike the U.S. and Texas, everything here is smaller rather than larger and a lamb's leg would only serve one person. I must say that after the shock of look ing at a platter with 12 to 16 hunks of mostly bones, I happily discovered that the meat around them was extremely tender and succulent. At the end of our very Italian meal, I asked King Vidor if he was pleased with the results of "War and Peace." He spoke a mouthful by saying: . "It will, I believe, be one of the greatest movies ever made." Bison Is the true name of the buffalo. It comes from an old German word, wisent, a first cousin of our buffalo in Europe. The true buffalo is a native of India where he was domesti cated, and of Africa, where it is considered by many the most dangerous of wild game. On THe Side by e. v. During (Distributed by King Ftihtr Syndicate. Inc.) The longest kiss in the history of New York stage was the one Olga Nethefsole planted on the lips of her leading fnan in . the play "Sappho." That kiss lasted one a half minutes. The average kiss among loving couples lasts only about ten seconds. To get an idea of the celebrated "Neth ersole Kiss," why. not give your wife a kiss and hold it for a minute and a half by your watch? Moihers-in-Law ' How do you address your mother in law? Better call her "mother," In a recent divorce case, a husband named as one of grounds for divorce that his wife stubbornly refused to call her mother in law, "mother," but addressed her as "Mrs." Horses and Women There continues to. be a great difference of opinion among our countrywomen as to the pleas ure, or lack of it, of being kissed by a man with a moustache. In this connection let it be said for the record, that it was none other than that great expert on the subject of love, Sarah Bern hardt,, who observed, "unbaiser donne par'un homme sans mous tache a le gout d'une soup sans sel." . Guide io Guys Aries (March 21-April 20) men are susceptible to flattery but it must be subtle. They like the maternal in women. As execu tives they are inclined to be critical and exacting. The way for a secretary to handle an Aries boss is to make him think she thinks he is wonderful; to express in maternal fashion con cern as to his health and greet his criticisms and demands for perfection with a sweet smile of resignation. Or, so say the stargazers. Health Hint How do you like sauerkraut? Can't say I am much of a sauer kraut enthusiast. However I know it is very good for the health. It has been referred to by dieticians as "the vacuum cleaner of the stomach." Sauer kraut did not originate in Ger many but in China. Was used by the Chinese to furnish the vitamins that are lacking in a rice diet.. Are you a card player? Do you consider yourself an observ ant fellow? If so, tell us how many of the kings in a pack of cards have mustaches. . . As for a fellow named in honor of Frank Merriwell, there is Frank Mer riwell Decker of Union City, N.J. Decker's father was an avid Merriwell fan. . . Describing the lion as "king of the beasts" or "monarch of the jungle" is er roneous. A lion is not as smart as a tiger or brave as a leopard. Young Brides An interesting angle to the matrimonial career of Charles Chaplin is that all of his wives were teen-agers when he mar ried them Paulette Goddard, the third Mrs. Chaplin, was the old est of the four brides. She was 19. Mildred Harris and Lita Grey were both 16, Oona O'Neill was 18. Please Note Did you know bananas are grown in Iceland? It's a fact. They are grown in glass cov ered houses with heat supplied by hot springs. Iceland is a mis leading name for the country that bears it. It is colder in New York City in January than in Iceland. Potatoes are not very fatten ing. There are about 29 calories in an ounce of potatoes. In an ounce of butter there are 219 calories. It is the butter people put on potatoes that makes them fattening. . . . Heavyweights can not hope for a long life. That's what the longevity experts are always saying. An exception was General Winfield Scott who was 6 feet 5 and weighed 310. He lived to be 80. Facts All long distance trains on Italian railways have film thea ter cars attached. Wonder what railroad in this country will be the first to add that addition to their service? ... Portland Hoffa (Mrs. Fred Allen) is named after 'Portland, Me., and not Portland, Ore., as is frequently alleged. The kangaroo family has more than 50 members, says the Na tional Geographic Society. Some are called' by other names wallaroo, wallaby, euro, and pa demelon. They range from the foot-long musky-rat kangaroo to seven-foot red and great grays.
