EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) Holy Cross, Seattle Win Cage Tussles By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press Sporls Writer Holy Cross, a regular visitor to post-season basketball tourna ments since the end of World War II, can count on another tourney berth this year because it appears far and away the best cteam in New England. The Crusaders, ranked 13th nationally, racked up their 12th win in 14 starts Tuesday night in Worcester, Mass., by an em phatic 81-67 score over Dart mouth. More important, the win gave Holy Cross a perfect 8-0 record against New England ri vals. Holy Cross has appeared in the National Invitation tourna ment for the last two years, winning it in 1954. But it also could be tapped for a berth in the NCAA tournament, which it won in 1947. Lost To San Francisco The Crusaders' only losses have been to national champion San Francisco and Alabama and they now have a string of six wins that" includes triumphs over Duquesne and Connecticut, the favorite in the Yankee Con ference. Oklahoma City, ranked 17th nationally, was Tuesday night's big upset victim, bowing to Se attle, 8984, in overtime at Se attle. It) was only the third loss in 13 starts for Oklahoma City. The two teams meet again to night. NOT AFTER WSC POST Compton, Calif. (U.R)! Coach Tay Brown of Compton college said today he has with drawn his name as a candidate for the head football coaching position at Washington State col lege. The Crusaders, unmarred in the loop, recorded their third decision. It was the first set back in three conference en gagements for the Bulldogs. Butte Falls, sparked by the deadeye shooting of Bill Irwin, rose up to spill Rogue River 66 to 54 in the circuit last night and Prospect, although off stride, clipped Jacksonville 55 to 42 for a second place tie Vith Talent in the standings. St. Mary's had to recover from nine-point deficits in the first quarter to subdue the Bull dogs. Butte Falls stayed on top all the way in a rough hassle to turn back an off-form Chief tain club. Irwin rolled in 35 points. Jacksonville gave Pros-, pect a slow deliberate mix. The Cougars tried to speed it up but were ragged and flashed their real power only once in getting victory. Bulldog Hustle Talent outhustled and outshot St. Mary's in the first quarter. The Bulldogs put in nine points before the Crusaders could score and then held a 13 to 4 lead. St. Mary's fired back to slice the gap to 13 to 10 but Talent had a 16 to, 10 edge at the quarter. Three close in shots by Tony Miksche -on a rebound and a couple of feeds, two long range goals by Dick Paup, a jumper by Laval Meunier, two free shots by Gerald Darland and the re bounding and defensive work of 6-5 Jerry Flakus combined to put SM on top in the second quarter and the Crusaders kept the upperhand. The Crusaders caught up at 22-all on a longie by Paup. Gary Combs made it 23 to 22 for Tal ent but Miksche canned a close jumper with IVi minutes left in the half for 24 to 23. Miksche added a gifter and Paup and John Walsh field goals for a 29 to 23 halftime lead. After three " ' Wednesday, January 18, I95S to quarters SM led 46 to 35 and in the fourth panel the Medford team had 15-point spreads of 52 to 37 and 54 to 39. - The Bulldogs sparked up to outscrap St. Mary's in the final minutes but the lead was too wide to overcome. ' Paup with 20 points and Miksche with 13 headed the scorers. The height combination of Flakus, Miksche and Walsh was a definite asset to the Cru saders in busting up the Talent offense and grabbing the re bounds and the SM club got a noticable uplift when Flakus en tered the fray. The fast breaking play of Meunier and Paup was also a feature for the Crusaders. Talent drive and hustle made it - a real struggle all the way. Bob Hoffman, Mel Wallace and Gordon Thoreson paced the Bulldogs on the run and Gary Combs and Ray Weinhold con tributed rugged and ballhawk ing play under the boards. Butte Falls had 18 to 12, 36 to 23 and 48 to 35 quarterly leads on Rogue River. Bilbee Lane was top shooter for Rogue River with 25 points. Prospect margins by periods were 11 to 10, 26 to 15, and 37 to 26. Don Vannice . contrib uted the outstanding play fof the Cougars and had 21 points. Bob Guches scored 14 for Jackson ville. Dead line for Sunday Classified Is at noon Saturday Red Raiders Meet Vikes At Ashland Ashland Southern Oregon's red hot Raider hoop quintet will be playing at home this week end, Friday and Saturday, for the first time within a month. Visiting the Raiders will be the Portland State Vikings, Ore gon collegiate -conference cham pions of last year. This season they are again setting a good pace in the circuit. Coach Ted Schopfs Raiders came through the Oregon Col lege of Education frays in great style, jumping off to command ing leads in the early moments of both games and winning 88 59 and 73-47. Reserves were able to see lots of action and gave the key-men in the Raider of fense a much needed rest. Ore gon College just didn't have enough "wolves" to stop the on slaughts of the charging Raiders. Outstanding Cagers This week-end's two game series with the Portlanders may be the toughest test the Raiders have this season. Coach Sharkey Nelson's experienced crew of lettermen sharpshooters boast both height and speed. Southern Oregon hoop fans will be able to see such outstanding Portland State hoopsters as Jack Viskov, Jack Parker, Ron Nenow, and Paul Poetsch, all in action on the SOC maple court. Viskov, Parker, Nenow, stand in the .'neighborhood of 6-5, while teammate Poetsch, the chief playmaker stands 5-10. The Portland State-Southern Oregon cage series last year was highlighted when the Vikings, holding a three-point lead, ex ecuted a five-minute stall in the closing minutes of the first half of the first night ball game. This year the Portland Staters had little trouble trouncing the OTI Owls twice and the OCE Wolves in three early season OCC con tests. Viskov, Poetsch Deadly Perhaps the most troublesome factor the Vikings will offer the Red Raiders is the deadeye shoot ing from out in front of the key hole by Viskov and Poetsch. Should Coach Sharkey Nelson fail to find a scoring punch with these two lads,' he can generally depend upon Parker, Nenow, Frazier or Mclntyre to dunk in a few points from in under the basket. Other gold and green Portland hoopsters likely to see action will be Perkins, Green, Lee, Koski, Robertson and Thompson. Southern Oregon, owning a conference record of two wins and two defeats, will be out to improve that mark. Coach Ted Schopf will have to rely upon his "big" one-two scoring punch of Bill Hollingsworth and Lloyd Hoffine to carry the major load. Hal Titus, lanky SOC center will have his hands full, fighting the boards with the Portland "skyscrapers." Raider guards Dale Bates and Chuck Crandall have proved their ability to score on those long one handers from out in front of the keyhole. SOC has the scoring punch to win, but may lack the height on the back boards to grab those all-important rebounds and score on the tip-ins. " . The two night stand may de cide the fate of the 1956 OCC basketball crown. Bobo's Manager Battles Robinson San Francisco (U.R) Middle weight Champion Sugar Ray Robinson was getting more of a battle today from Carl (Bobo) Olson's manager than he got from the ex-champion in win ning back the title last month. Olson's manager, Sid Flaherty of San Francisco, said he would demand Robinson's suspension by the California Athletic Com mission if he did not live up to an agreement for a return title fight within 90 days. Such a suspension could re sult in a Robinson ban in all other National Boxing associa tion states. Robinson, who scored a sec ond round knockout over the Hawaiian fighter in Chicago Dec. 9, informed the Internation al Boxing club Monday he could not get ready for a rematch ten tatively set for Feb. 24 and sug gested a June date. Saddler Opposes Gabriel Elorde San Francisco (U.R) Sandy Saddler and , Gabriel (Flash) Elorde meet tonight in a 15 round featherweight title bout with the ringwise champion fa vored to reverse an earlier de cision scored by the then little known Filipino. Antonelli, Bauer Dislike Salary Offers for 1956 By MILTON RICHMAN United Press Sports Writer Johnny Antonelli of the Gi ants, Hank Bauer of the Yankees and Richie Ashburn of the Phil lies all shared a common lack of enthusiasm for signing their con tracts today. Antonelli, who won 14 games and lost 16 last season, is ob jecting to the slice the Giants want him to take. Bauer feels his 20 home runs and .278 average for the Yan kees rates more than the same contract he worked under last year. Not Happy And Ashburn, who led the Na tional League in batting with a .338 mark, thinks the Phillies should have given him a bigger raise In a letter to General Man ager Roy Hamey, Ashburn wrote he has neither "approved nor disapproved" his 1956 contract. Boiled down, that means he's not happy. Antonelli, who skidded sharp ly after his 21 victories in 1954, admitted he has rejected the Gi ants' first offer.
