It was gangland's buttonhole flower for nearly six years. . On Jan. 17, 1950, in the count ing-house of Brink's Inc., in Bos ton's North End, seven gro tesquely masked men walked si lently on rubber shod shoes to the second floor. Twenty minutes later they emerged with the greatest cash money haul in history. The setting: ChUl, grey eve ning outside Brink's three-story fortress. Seven men clad in Navy pea coats climbed out of a light panel truck and moved like ghosts up the stairs. There is one command. "Open the door. This is a stickup." Five employees, cowed and frightened, saw seven revolvers thrust into their faces. Two min utes later the employees were trussed and their mouths taped. They were ordered to lie on he floor. The only sound was the glide of muffled steps across the counting-house floor. The bandits methodically looted the money rooms and stuffed thousands of dollars into canvas bags. The sound of a buzzer brought a hoarse, gutteral .curse "What was that?" Tape was ripped from the mouth of one employee, who explained there was someone outside requesting entrance. With only a few minutes left, masked figures dragged then sacks full of money down the stairs. - At 7:36 p.m. one employee twisted from the ropes and sounded an alarm. Seven minutes later road blocks were set up on all bridges leading from Boston and 14 states were notified by teletype. Hordes of investigators swung Back at the Brink's counting house bewildered employees tried to tell their story. The rob bers vanished leaving no finger prints, no clues. The bull-headed, stubborn person who appears to be so strong is, in reality, not as strong as the person who is willing to compromise. To compromise, a person must be willing to give in to others and this he does, not because he thinks perhaps he is wrong but rather because he believes that others have rights just as he does and that meeting them half-way will lead to better feel ings all around. This takes courage and strength of character which few people who will make compro mises are given credit for. It Is never easy to give up some cherished dream or some ambi tion to satisfy another person and this often happens when a person compromises. Mt Accept Wishes Take, for example, the busi nessman who is driven by ambi tion to reach the top of the business ladder. This he could do if he were to devote most of his time and energy to his work. (Jiut he realizes this is not fair to his family, so he spends time with them that he might be spending on his work or on activities that would help him reach the top of the ladder In his work. , In the same way, the person who is recognized as a leader must be willing to accept the wishes of the majority of the group and carry them out even though he would prefer to do things some other way. He may even have to compromise to the extent of doing things in a way which he knows will be less successful than the way Ohe suggested because the ma jority of the group prefers it that way. This shows strength, not weakness, on his part and that is why tie retains his posi tion of leadership. (A) Your wife probably needs Jess rather than more. Dissat isfaction comes mainly from a poor sense of values. A person who has "everything" loses her sense of values and does not appreciate what she has. The result is dissatisfaction and un happiness. Try doing less for your wife and making every thing sh gets seem more valu able to her by having her do things to win her rewards. She may not like this at first but you will find that she will gradu ally get a better sense of values and then things will mean more to her. This will gradually bring greater satisfaction on her part. Grumpy teen-ager: "Our 15-year-old son is constantly grum py and disagreeable at home.' However, when he is with friends, I find he is very pleas ant agreeable. I can't under stand why he shows us his worst side." 0 A.S.T. . (A) There are many people who are like your son, and they are not all teen-agers, either. Your son, like others who be have as he does, doubtless feels it is more important to be nice to outsiders than to members of the family. So, when he feels grumpy, he expresses his feel ings at home but makes an effort' to be agreeable to outsiders be cause he wants to win their favor. It is also possible that he, like many teen-agers, feels no one "understands" him at home and this adds to his grumpiness. Living in the past: "My hus band, who is still a relatively young man in his middle forties, is always talking about the things - he did when he was a boy.
