TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, January 15, 1956 New Development in Plywood Technology Cuts Production Cost Seattle U.R) A unique new development in plywood technology which "will signifi cantly lower production costs in the manufacture of plastic-surfaced plywood" has been an nounced jointly by United Stat es Plywood Corp. and Crown Zellerbach Corp. Officials of the two firms said the immediate result of the new technique is a weather and water-proof plastic-surfaced fir ply wood panel that promises to lower the cost and lengthen the life of homes, commercial build ings, signs, small boats, built-ins and even kitchen cabinets and "do-it-yourself" items. The new process also will in- Fir Operators And Union Agree Portland (U.P.) A pay agreement that would average about nine cents anohour was an nounced here Thursday by the International Woodworkers of America and fir operators who employ about 30.GG0 members of the union. The agreement would be ef fective until June 1, 1957. The latest contract settlement calls for wage increases of 4'4 per cent for an average of nine cents an hour, plus improved holiday and vacation clauses. It is retroactive to Dec. 1, 1955, subject to approval by referen dum. H. J. Greeley, chairman of the employers' negotiating commit tee, sal the agreement was pat- xernea aiter tnose recently ap proved by thousands of other lumber workers throughout the northwest. Total payrolls in the industry were expected to increase by about $21,000,0000 a year if all segments approve the contracts. Portland College Has First Graduate Portland (U.R) William G. Gallagher, Portland, has won the distinction of being the first graduate of Portland State col lege. School officials said Friday that Gallagher would not re ceive his degree until formal graduation exercises in June but that he had completed four years of work toward an educa tion degree and had begun teaching at Grout school.. Gallagher not only was the first graduate of the newly ac credited institution but he took all his undergraduate work in Portland. Named Duraply The new panel, which United State Plywood will market un der the name Duraply, will be faced with Crown Zellerbach Crezon, a resin cellulose plastic sheet fused to the panel surface. Duraply combined the paint ability of modern plastics with the strength and versatility of plywood, company spokesmen said. The plywood is so strong that one thickness of Duraply can function as both outside wall surface and structural sheath ing, they added. New Machint Key The key to the new process is a new patented machine that au tomatically fills knotholes, splits and other surface irregularities in the base panel with a plastic compound providing a smooth, solid foundation for the Crezon overlay. Company officials said this elifflinates without any sac rifice in quality the need for scarce and expensive high-grade surface veneer normally requir ed to provide a solid base for the plastic surface. Meadowbrook Ranch Purchase Announced The purchase of Meadowbrook ranch from Mrs. Ella Phillips by Harry Furch, Medford, was an nounced last week. The proper ty is located on Lake Creek rd., near Eagle Point. Mrs. Phillips had lived there for about 30 years. She plans to divide her time among her chidlren. Furch formerly owned the Half Circle 3 ranch at Colestin. He plans to raise registered Herefords 'and horses. Kenne'th Finley, formerly fore man at the Colestin properties, will be, foreman for Furch at Meadowbrook. Finley recently returned from Korea after serv ing there with the Army engin Motor Vehicle Tax Funds Received Here A total of $123,091.28, Jackson county's share from motor ve hicle taxes for the last quarter, was entered in the general road fund yesterday by County Treas urer Karl Janouch. The money, which is distribu ted according to motor vehicle registrations in each county, is derived from motor vehicle reg istration, fuel tax, motor carrier licenses, and fines for violation of motor vehicle laws. Jackson county has 33,806 reg istered motor vehicles. There are 21.3. persona per square mile in North America.
