Reg. $1.00 value Actress Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III of Monaco an nounced their engagement ai Philadelphia last. week. The 25-year-old beauty, who has had some of the best roles Hollywood has to offer, met the prince in Monte Carlo last year when she made a movie there. Actress, Prince Parted; Pair Attends Formal Ball By ELIZABETH TOOMEY United Press Correspondent New York (U.R) The ro mance of actress Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III of Mon aco turned into a long distance bethrothal last night when the two left for opposite ends of the United States. Miss Kelly left New York late yesterday for Hollywood and the sovereign of the tiny principal ity of Monaco, on the French Riviera, leaves for a few weeks of deep sea fishing in Florida. The two, who announced their engagement Thursday in Phila delphia, probably will have to whisper their sweet nothings over the long distance telephone lines until some time next month when Rainier makes a tour of the West. Films To Finish ' "Her Grace," as she already is known in the film world, must finish a movie, "The Swan," and do another film, "High Society" before she can marry the heir to the house of Grimaldi, prob ably in April. Miss Kelly showed Friday SUPER QUALITY CANNON Bath Towels MEDFORD'S BARGAIN CORNER night how an American acts when she is rehearsing for her role as a princess before a criti cal audience of 1,500 socialites. She demonstrated at a charity ball here that by doing what comes naturally one American girl, at least, can slip into a regal role without fluffing a line. Miss Kelly co-starred at the ball, "A Night in Monte Carlo," with her new fiance, a good looking 32-year-old fellow who was born to succeed to the throne of the tiny principality. Miss Kelly entered the royal box with the prince shortly' after 9 p.m. while the formally-dressed ball guests crowding the Wal dorf Astoria grand ballroom be low watched and applauded. The prince fidgeted and gazed un smilingly around the room while the orchestra played the Monaco national anthem and the "Star Spangled Banner." As Tall as Prince His future princess, ' her hair drawn back tightly into a regal bun on the back of her head and wearing a bell-skirted white Christian Dior evening gown, stood erect as tall as the prince by her side and smiled radiant ly. ' - Her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. John B. Kelly, were among the 12 guests in the royal box. The charity ball guest list included some of New York's top society names, plus a gen erous turnout of European roy alty. An unofficial count showed names of four princesses, five princes, four countesses and counts and two Austrian duchesses. arch- Luncheon Planned For Social Club, Jacksonville Adarel Social club will meet for a dessert luncheon at 12 noon, Thursday,. ' Monaco Citizens Want Grace Kelly To Continue Career Monte Carlo (U.R) Monaco citizens said today they want Grace Kelly to go on making pic tures when she becomes their Princess but after she has had some babies. The Monegasques made it plain they want Miss Kelly both in person and on the screen fol lowing her marriage to Prince Rainier III of this tiny princi pality. It was -different with Rainier's grandfather, Prince Louis II, who married a Parisian actress. The Monegasques never quite ac cepted her. "Acting is so artistic," said Mrs. S y 1 v i e Romangani. "I should be very unhappy to think she was giving up so great a career on our account. "Let her marry our Prince, and then perhaps, after she has had some babies, maybe she can make another film." Another Monsegasque, Mrs. Marie-Louise Castallanu, ' was asked what the people of Monaco would think of seeing Princess Grace on the screen in the arms of, say Clark Gable. "It's art, after all,; said Mrs. Castallanu. "Everybody knows it's just acting. I hope she goes on making films." An official spokesman, mean while, branded "absurd" a re port that Miss Kelly's movies should be banned here to avoid any possible embarrassment aris ing from scenes showing the Prince's bride-to-be in the arms of another man.
