T&&RTEEX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, January 8, 1958 . I , . ! ' r."ff'frr-'' i"-M-MJI.JIII.UJ. II .Jlil.BJlll u ; ; Jgj I l mju-pa v,,,- aril i ,i n :- la,' Doctors GAifempf To Save Life Of Farm Polio Victim Chicago U.R) Doctors fought Saturday to save the life of one of eight farm brothers and sisters who were afflicted with polio. The boy, 15-year-old Edward Walsh of Durand, 111., has been in a coma since Wednesday. His left lung collapsed Friday and his skin has turned a strange greenish color. Grave Condition Doctors at the University of Illinois Research and Education al Hospital said he was in grave condition. Edward and seven of his bro thers and sisters became polio victims within a week last Sep tember. Five of the Walsh chil dren recovered, but Edward and his 17-year-old brother, David, had been afflicted with the ser lous bulbar type of polio. The brothers were brought here recently from a Rockford, HI., hospital and David s con dition has been favorable. How ever, doctors expressed grave fears for his brother. No Reason for Color The physicians had not yet definitely established the reason for Edward's greenish-colored skin. But they believed it was caused by the slow movement of blood through his wasted body. Edward's lack of strength to keep his lungs filled with air, even with the aid of an iron lung, was also blamed for his collapsed lung. A hospital spokesman said the collapse was not "unusual" in such cas es. But It made the boy's con dition "more serious," he said. Electrical Uni Rejects Proposal ByWeslinghouse Washington U.R) The CIO Electrical Workers union last night rejected as "autocratic" the proposal by We&inghouse El ectric Corp. that Westinghouse workers take a vote on whether they want to end their 12-week-old strike? IUE President James B. Carey urged instead that the dispute be turned over to an impartial fact finding board, as recommended by Director Joseph J. Finnegan of the Federal Mediation service. Ii,a letter to Finnegan, Carey said that Westinghouse's propos al of acyote by the striking work ers is a "totalitarian" and "un American way' of trying to set tle the prolonged, bitter dispute. Would Vote e The workers, he said, would be called upon to vote whether to accept the company's offer or continue the strike, and not upon the issues whfch caused the strike. "If the employees reject the offer, as we know they would and as they have done time and time again in their meetings," Carey said, "we will be back where we started. "This Is the heads-we-win, tails-you-lose technique. It is the totalitarian way. It is the West inghouse way. It is the un-American way." Westinghouse Vice President (Robert D. Blasier proposed the secret ballot Friday as- an alter- nate to Finnegan's suggestion that a fact-finding board be cre ated to look into the dispute and make recommendations as a ba sis for further negotiations. Bla sier said the issues in the dispute were not "proper subjects" for the fact-finding procedure. The strike effects some 30 Westinghouse plants across the nation. The population of El Salvador is about 140 persons per square mile, the second most densely populated of the American re publics. ' OFF SCHEDULE?
