Med Treasure JOity-State Now Gone 'But Its Stamps Exist Recently, while having my watch repaired, I noticed an orange colored stamp stuck in the edge of the mirror which hangs above Irv's desk. I made out a double-headed eagle peering to right and left as, the chief feature of its design. Such prominence given to this medieval heraldic creature vir tually assured the stamp's being pre-World War I. It was that all right. The words LUBECK and POST MARKE, appearing abpve and below the bird, indicated the stamp was even older than I had hoped. Lubeck, once a free city-state on an arm of the Baltic, van ished from the international scene when it was gobbled up by Imperial Germany back in 1870. CHECK SEVERAL CATALOGS Ned's face was about a foot long;) "I wanted to iielp him out," he said, "so when he of fered me this coin, I agreed to pay him the full catalogue price, and it was $200. Here it is. . "Of course," he said, laying the quarter in my hand, "I do't mincfltoo much. The inconveni ence isn't great, and it will be all forgotten anywav after a While." Recalling other occasions when Ned had proved a soft touch for old friends who, had actually never been more than acquaint ances, I looked at the coin cur sously. To my amazement it was an 1827 quarter. Hastily pulling out a magnifying glass, I held the coin under it. The date was al most mint clear, andwithout a sign of the 7 having been struck over a 3, as is often the case with quarters of this issue. OLD DIRECTORIES IN GOOD SHAPE HAVE PREMIUM VALUE Hank took two books off his study shelf and handed them to me as carefully as if they had been printed by Guttenberg. I looked down at the titles, ex pecting to see a couple of the rarer works of Brjete Harte or Mark Twain, but the authors' names I saw meant absolutely nothing to me. And there was no Reason why they should. The title of the larger volume was "A directory of Ogden City & Weber County." The other was "A Pocket Directory of Busi ness Houses of Salt Lake City." "How did you happen to find these," I asked, trying to avoid saying anything that might hurt Hank's feelings. "Well, Pink, there's a little hole-in-the-wall of a secondhand store rightacross from the Reno railroad station. And that's where I found -them. They were sitting on a shelf among a lot 19-FOR SALE, REAL ESTATE RELOCATING? HERE'S A BARGAIN! Hwy. 99 frontage, pumice building. Safe, high and dry, snug and warm. I got a stamp catalogue from my car and found the orange item, a one schilling issue, was put out in 1859 and therefore was among the earliest German stamps. When I showed it to Irv, he was pleased "but not particularly impressed. "I took that out of a logket I fixed the other day for Jim Krauss. It was used as backiijg for a picture of his great grand mother, and I just forgot to put it back." "But don't you realize this is valuable, man," I said. "Look. Unused, as this is, and gummed which is that crackly stuff on the back' and with the floral watermark which you can see in the rjaper, this has a catalogue value of $80." BEFORE SELLING ANY COIN I asked Ned for the name of the catalogue he had used, and when he told me, I pulled three others from my shelf. "You're lucky he didn't use one of these," I said, "because it would really have cost you money a whale of a lot more." The prices listed for an orig inal 1827 quarter as against a restrike were $1,000, $2,000 and $2,500 At first TJed found the news confusing, but. when he learned strikes and originals combined, were coined in that year, he be gan to feel that the higher fig ures were nearer the true value. "But what's the best way to sell it?" he asked. I suggested that he put out a letter describing it andmail it to a substantial list of dealers and private collectors. He did that, selling the piece in a little less than two months for $1,250. of cheap novels, and all they cost me was 60c." "Of course," I said, "these aren't so very old. The Ogden City Directory is only 1883, and the other one is even later, 1886." "But what should you get for 60c," Hank asked. "Certainly it would have been nice to have got the oldest one ever put out, soethingthat would be valued in'the hundreds of dollars. But these two books are in prime condition, and since the Ogden Directory brought $37.50 at auc tion, for an inferior, too, and a copy of the other went for $15 at an auction last year, I think I made a rather good buy." And ofcourse he had. All of which goes to show that old di rectories have a premium value, if in good condition.
