Get It Right What was the longest bar in the history of the United States? The arguments as to this are endless. Get it right! The long est in this country was that of Erickson's Saloon in Portland, Ore. That bar was 684 feet in length! It- is not ancient history either. Many living men have memories of Erickson's. The price of a schooner of beer there was 5 cents. Each schooner had a capacity of 16 ounces. The price of hard liquor-served in old fashioned whisky glasses was two drinks for a quarter. Erickson's also served what many claim was the country's most elaborate free lunch. The purchase of one drink made the buyer eligible to partake of this generous meal. Or to put it more particularly: Whether we will continue to see things like "Wide Wide World," "Assignment: India," the Sad ler's Wells Ballet and dramas such as "The Skin of Our Teeth" . . . or whether viewers will be fed an increasing drama of sure fire quiz games, variety shows, dramas and situation comedies. And according to the talk heard everywhere along ' TV row, the key network in this crisis period will be NBC. Executive Shakeup It was only a few weeks ago that NBC announced a shakeup along its top level. The change boosted Sylvester "Pat" Weaver from president to chairman of the board. And it upped Robert Sarnoff into Weaver's old spot the key post in the organization. Young Sarnoff Is the son of Brig. Gen. David Sarnoff, chairman of the board of RCA, whicli is the parent company of NBC. What this new alignment will mean has touched off speculation down the line within the industry-Weaver, a dynamic, creative personality, has come to be as sociated with the, imaginative approach. It was Weaver who shattered rigid time lines by coming up tacular." . It was Weaver who shattered space lines with "Wide Wide World." It was during Weaver's term as president that Monitor was launched an at tempt to carry out flexible time and content paths for radio. But in all this creative oint ment there was one small finan cial fly. Despite the critical suc cess accorded Weaver's experi ments, CBS continued to turn out the programs that attracted the biggest audiences. CBS Leads Survey In a Trendex survey charting the top 10 programs for the en tire month of November. CBS grabbed nine of the spots. ABC TV's "Disneyland" held the lone non-CBS spot. The CBS network did it with programs like '"The S64.000 Question," "I Love Lucy" and the Ed Sullivan show. And in the latest. - Trendex survey for the first week of De cember, CBS showed eight of the top 11 shows. George Gobel, Perry . Como and' the "Hit Pa rade" were the only NBC front runners. . There is . another , significant f a c t o r, too. Although NBC's share of network billings has jumped over the past years, NBC still is running about 6 per cent behind CBS in dollar billings. Weaver, as chairman of the board, is no longer in the direct operator's seat at NBC. What this means, say many observers, is that NBC may begin to soft pedal the offbeat approach for which it became famous during the Weaver regime. Or, as one observer recently money now,' not headlines." Next year may well tell story. the It took Abraham Lincoln only two minutes and 15 seconds to deliver the historic Gettysburg address.
