But at 1 a.m. on the day be fore Christmas when he heard reports the levee had broken on the oposite side, Johnson gave up the fight and returned to his home. "My wife had been listening to the radio which had said not to be alarmed," Johnson said. "So she finally had goae to sleep jujt before I arrived. I. could al ready hear the water sweeping through the houses it sounded like waves in the ocean lapping up against a pier. Ki&i Wr Asleep "The kids were all asleep. They were dazed when I told them the floods were coming and we had to get out. I finally had to dress most of them myself. My wife picked up a few Knick- nacks and a bit of money she had stashed away. "I was putting furniture up off the floor when I heard peo ple nol far away begin to scream as the water hit their homes. "We had to get out. It was per haps 15 minutes after Gary and I returned from working on the levees. "We have two cars and I put my wife and six of the children in one and started them on their wav to Colusa. I don't know how many people there were who were asleep or just wouldn't be lieve the water would come into Yuba City. They didn't have a chance. I think they will find whole families, hundreds of people, when they're able to go tfirough the houses." Spotted Wife's Car Johnson said he arrived in Colusa, some 20 miles to the west, to find his wife and fam ily had not registered there. A short time later, however, he spotted her car in a slow-moving Flood Losses Are Tax Deductible, IRB Says Washington '(U.R) The In ternal Revenue Bureau is rush ing special pamphlets to flood stricken California and Nevada today explaining what losses are deductible from income taxes and how to compute them. An Internal Revenue Bureau official disclosed last night that individual help in making out returns for flood sufferers will be given to the "fullest extent needed." This is a modification of an earlier Internal Revenue stand that it will cut to the min imum its individual help in mak ing out tax forms next year. In addition to aid in making out returns, the service also has L arranged to "flag" such returns wnen it receives xnem ana rusn payment of any refunds due. I guess we slept an hour, then we started for Gridley where there were church mem bers." Luckily a few last minute gifts for the children were in the trunk of one of the cars, so the Christmas would not be en tirely without gifts. But John son said he walked two miles through . waist high water the next day to retrieve more of the presents. "I was sneaking along, taking cover under trees whenever the helicopters went over as no one was supposed to re-enter the area," he said. "Maybe I did wrong but I wanted to see my house and I wanted to get those presents." So it was far from a lavish Christmas but Vaughn, 10; Ron nie, 7, and Robert, IVz, each had a toy jeep or truck to play with Christmas morning, while 5-year-old Mary Alice had a set of dishes. There also were gifts for Gary, Lanny, 14, and Vir gie, 16.
