One of the big steps forward was repo r t e d re cently at a meeting of 400 men doing re search with the American Rheum a t i s m Associ a t i o n . Dr. G. M. Ne- hei, 01 r'uraue, told the group that arthritis appears commonly in pigs after an attack of swine erysipelas. Following up this ob servation, Dr. Neher and his as sociates injected 291 pigs with a germ and in a high percent age of the animals they were able to produce a disease resem bling rheumatoid arthritis. Then they first vaccinated the animals against the infection and, after that, the germs pro duced arthritis in 100 per cent of the pigs. This observation re-enforces a hunch we physicians have long had that several chron ic diseases are due to the action of an infection on the arteries of a person who is first sensi tized or made allergic to the germ. "We sometimes have sen such serious disease follow a marked reaction to the injec tion of some serum. Interestingly, the rheumatoid disease in pigs responds well to cortisone and ACTH. It is very encouraging to know that at last a serious type of arthritis can be studied in animals. It is helpful, also, to know that a disease that looks like rheuma toid arthritis can be due to a reaction to a bacterium. Mental Illness I was much pleased to find in Science News Letter that Jane Stafford, the prize-winning Sci ence-writer, told members of the National Association for Mental Health at their recent meetine that today one can hardly find a newspaper or magazine that hasn't some note or article on mental disease. As Miss Stafford said, the public has at last passed the stage of shunning thoughts of mental illness. It has now reached the stage of "wanting to read about it: wanting to know more about what it is. and what can be done about it." This is good news because adequate research is seldom done on a disease until the pub lic wants it done, and is willing to pay for it. Schrunk Removal Ruled by Thornton Salem (U.R)- Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton said Friday that it was his 'opinion present law requires Gov. Paul Patterson to remove Multnomah County Sheriff Terry Schrunk I from office. Thornton added, however, that he didn't think the law was constitutional. Gov. Paul L. Patterson with- j held comment until he had more jtime to study the attorney gen j eral's opinion. The law requires the governor to declare vacant the office of a public official under bond who suffers a damage judgment against him. On Dec. 8, 20 counties in west ern "Washington and 18 in west ern Oregon were designated dis aster areas. Friday's action ex tends the designation to the east ern parts of the states. Nurserymen in both states who suffered damage from the freeze are now eligible to apply to the SBA's Seattle or 'Portland field offices for low interest dis aster loans. The amount of energy fixed annually in the rugar manufac tured by plants in the U.S. i the equivalent of about 300,000, 000 tons of coal.
