Barbara Swindle. Farming ton, Utah, had left a depart ment store where she worked when she found her purse had been robbed of S50, almost all her week's earnings. Next she found a tire on her car was flat. She couldn't find anyone to fix it. She walk ed into a nearby bus station and was trying vainly to keep back tears when a soldier from Chicago persuaded her to tell him her troubles. Ha handed her a S10 bill and told her to get some change so she could telephone home for help. When she returned the sol dier had boarded a bus for Chicago. , A ticket seller told Barbara the soldier said to "keep the change and have a Merry Christmas." Although she was unable to find out the soldier's name, Barbara said "I certainly wish that soldier, whoever he is, a Merry Christmas." The elements carbon, copper, gold, iron, lead, mercury, silver, sulfur, tin and zinc were discov ered before the birth of Christ. 0 M II I Oven-Ready TURKEYS Broad Breasted All sizes-HENSorTOMS MORREL'S PRIDE TENDERIZED! U.R) The little town of Santa Claus ap peared headed for its biggest and best Christmas on record today. With Santa Claus' big day only four days away, residents reported the number of sight seers and the volume of mail handled at the local post office were both running at a near-record pace. Important Place Once again, this little south ern Indiana village has become one of the most important places on the map for the duration of the Christmas season. Letters from all over the world pour into the post office so that they can be relayed with the "Santa Claus" postmark on the enve lopes. Postmaster Elbert S. Reinke, the Santa Claus of Santa Claus," said from 8,000 to 10,000 letters are receiving the famous post mark every day and the peak of the rush is yet to be reached. He expects a daily load of 125,000 pieces of mail before Christmas is over. Reinke also announced that a 9-year-old Rocky Point, N.Y., boy, Noel Baxter, has been chosen as honorary mayor of Santa Claus for 1956. Noel was chosen in a nationwide contest Bond Sales Show Increase In County Jackson county residents, dur ing November, purchased fewer United States Savings bonds than in the same month last year, but the total sales in the county in 11 months was more than 3100,000 more than last year. Some S75.294 worth of bonds were purchased last month, com pared to S87,955 in November, 1954, according to figures re leased by the state sales director recently. The total for the first 11 months this year was Sl,025,742, compared to S914,029 for the same period in 1954. In the state, E and H savings bond series totaled $2,812,192 last month, according to George W. Mimnaugh, sales director. The figure is 6 per cent more than was purchased in Novem ber, 1954, in the state. The 11 month total for the state was S41,475,092 this year, a 25 per cent increase over last year. ooen to all children who were born on Christmas Eve or Christ mas Day. The village of Santa Claus owes its nationwide fame to the fact that its original name was too common. Would Confuse People Back in 1852, the village, was called Santa Fe. But, when the villagers petitioned for a post office, the postal department turned them down. There was already a Santa Fe station in Indiana and another would simply confuse people, it said. The villagers consulted again and chose Santa Claus. As a re sult, the town is one of the most famous communities in the na tion around Christmas time and tons of mail flood the post of fice. A 40-ton statute of Santa Claus has been erected to greet the holiday tourists. There is also a Christmas fairyland, com plete with a candy castle and a wishing well. , The first passenger train be tween St. Louis and Kansas City required 14 hours for the 279 mile trip. Trains now make the run in five hours. Library Sfarls Delivery Service Through an arrangement be tween Western Union and the Medford Public Library, shut-in readers may have library books delivered to homes. A nominal fee will be charged for the service depending on the distance from the library of the borrower's residence. Frank H. Gray, manager of the local West ern Union office, has prepared a zoned map of the city indicating the various amounts required, ranging from 25 to 75 cents. A round-trip will be made to re turn books to the library for an additional 10 cents. Persons interested in the serv ice may call the library and indi cate the type book desirable. Library assistants will notify Western Union when books are ready for delivery. Because there are no library funds avail able, delivery fees will be col lected from the borrower.
