o o 0 EIGHT MDFOD (OREGON) NEW PLANE West Coast Airlines, which serves Medford. has announced purchasing options on six twin turboprop Fairchild F-27 planes for service. The planes cost about 5500,000 each, and is regarded as a leading contender for replacement of Douglas DC-3s for local service lines. The 40-passenger transports will be manufactured by the Aircraft division of Fairchild Engine and Airplane corporation, Hagerstown, Md., under license from Royal Netherlands Aircraft Factories Fokker, Amsterdam. Present plans call for delivery starting about RW-A - . California Colonies . . . Just as the colonists of Vir . ginia had to rely on Old Eng land as the major market place for their tobacco crops, so do we of Oregon and Washington deDend on California as the great neighboring market terri tory for our timber crops. This goes for our region's new metal products too, as well as for the Pacific Northwest's grain crops, livestock and other farm yields Focus dqyn on homes, family dwei:gs, in one county out of California's 53, to catch the pic ture.. In the first six months of 1955 Los Angeles county alone issued 47,319 permits for new dwelling units. No single state in the U.S.A. outside New York and California itself, beat this figure. In all of Texas, during the same period,, just 40,836onew dwelling permits were ' given. Illinois' permits numbered 35, 367, Michigan's 31,909, Ohio's 31,286, Pennsylvania's 24,904, and so on. Vfhat a market next door! G Our Golden Gate ... The California gold rush of 1849 sd the Pacific Northwest up in business, and endless en terprise expansion in the Golden State has been the tap root of our. own economic growth ever since. Right now the biggestothing in sight for all varieties of Pacific Northwest producers is the growth of population,0 and of productftn and prosperity in California. The present is un believable, the prospects are . fabulous. Now indeed the dreams of the Spanish explorers of the golden cities of Cibola and the . treasures of the Kingdom of Qui vira are coming true. Homes are thgt treasure, families the jewels. California building permits for new homes in the firft half of 1955 amounted to 117,306, for all of the state's 58 counties. New York State was next, with 50,945. In California West Coast forest products are the basic building material the great est single source of the Washington-Oregon $1,800,000,000 per year timber industry income. Fabulous Facts ... There is exciting reading in every issue of the "Monthly sum mary of Business Conditions in Southern California," published by the Security-First National Bank of Los Angeles. Just one simple chart of South ern California business activity, compared to population trend, makes the eye bug. The activity curve has wiggled up to 175 from the, 1947-1948 index of 100, while population is up to 135. This indicates that the aver age Southern Californian is mak ing more ag0 spending more money than in the early post- war years. And shows why the people keep coming, why the people already there are baby- havin', folks beyond compare. Total factory employment is Stevenson Support Seen in 46 Stales Washington (U.R) Sen. A. Damage from the quakes was limited to broken windows, cracked plaster, and ceilings in several homes buckled. The Brawley Chamber of Commerce estimated damage at S50,000 in the city limits where store win dows were shattered Saturday night. No injuries were reported but some residents slept outside fol lowing the initial series of jolts Friday. A portion of the shop ping district of Brawley was roped off by police early Satur day to prevent looting. Dr. Charles F. Richter, seismo logist at the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena, said he had no idea as to how long the "slight jolts" would continue. At the same time, the five man commission voted to table action on rehabilitation of Ten mile lake. Commissioners voic ed confidence, at a hearing, in recommendations for poisoning by the staff, but voted for post ponement "because of other fac tors involved." Devils Lake will be treated with rotenone poison sometime in July. It will be restocked in the fall with rainbow trout. Stu dies presented at the hearing showed that the lake offers poor fishing because carp had de pleted food supplies. The game commission also ap proved acquisition of seven Rogue river fishing sites. Included were the Shady Cove, Tepper, Laurelhurst, Mc Leod and Lost Creek access points above Medford, and Rob ertson Bridge, 15 miles below Grants Pass. Boat ramps, parking sites and access roads will be provided at all except the Tepper easement site, where access will be pro vided by extending an old coun ty road. The commission said it was in the process of securing an ease ment with the Clackamas Coun ty Court to set aside Poachers Drift, just above Barton Bridge, as a public fishing site. The commission approved a 10-year easement for fishing at SAUSAGE-APPLE CASSERALE New York (U.R) For a main dish which takes advantage of both plentiful pork and apples, try a sausage-apple casserole. Northwest Flood Damage Estimated At $450,( Boston (U.R) Total dam age from this year's Northeast floods was estimated at $450, 000,000 in an official report to day by the federal Civil De fense administration. The floods Aug. 1, 18 and .19, and again on Oct. 13, 14, 15 and 16 took 110 lives, injured 5339 persons and destroyed 841 homes. Property Loss Heavy Loss of taxable property in 535 flood-damaged towns was estimated at $81,360,000. The 'October floods damaged 105 of these towns which previously were hit in August by a 20-inch rainfall on the tail of hurricane Diane. Damage to roads was $70,458, 200 in Connecticut, Massachu setts, New Jersey, Rhode Island and New York . The Army engineers spent or allocated $34,461,927 on repair of bridges, dams, dikes and res ervoirs. The corps has $10,180, 000 still to be spent in Con necticut, hardest hit of the states. Private Autos Damaged Crop losses added up to $6, 328,000. The floods cost rail roads $11,850,000. Damage to private automobiles was $1,202, 132. The federal Small Business administration has approved $23,231,697 in loans to business men and home owners for flood repairs and replacements. This figure is low because the pro gram is lagging, the SBA report ed this week, due to loss of vital business records in the floods. WATCH . a" m4 Mm&mr NO MONEY DOWN 2.23 WEEK Failure Seen in Effort To Restore Rigid Supports Washington (U.R) Rep. Har old D. Cooley (D-N.C.) concedes that Democratic efforts to re store rigid high farm price sup ports next year will fail. But he says the move will provide a "clear-cut" farm issue for next year's elections. Cooley, chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, predict ed Sunday that the Senate will approve a House-passed bill to junk the administration's flexi ble support program in favor of high rigid price props. However, he said President Eisenhower is almost cetrain to veto it and Congress would fail to override. Would Consider New Proposals Coley said the final version of the farm bill sent to the White House would include any new farm proposals recommended by Mr. Eisenhower and Agricul ture Secretary Ezra T. Benson which Congress might consider "needed and worth-while." If this bill is vetoed, Cooley said, Congress would then pass a bill stripped of the controver sial price support provisions to which the President objects. "We could never get enough support in Congress to override a veto, and we would .not take the position that we .wouldn't give the President any farm legislation unless he signed the first bill," Cooley told a reporter. Issue for Elections Cooley said that a presidential veto of rigid supports would pro vide a "clear-cut" farm issue for the 1956 presidential elections. Democratic presidential' candi dates already have opened fire on .the administration on the farm issue. Some congressional Democrats were reported to have opened a behind-the-scenes drive' to cut down intra-party difference on price supports and win solid backing for other farm propos als.
