SOME UNHAPPINESS OF SICK PEOPLE An intelligent and thoughtful woman writes saying that "So cialized medicine is certain to c-rrip if vou rloctors, the medical schools and the professional as sociations d o not soon recog nize the frus trations, fears, uncertainties, and dissatis factions of many patients. I do wish you would discuss tiiese tiiouifcins with which we are faced now that the costs of illness are becoming so frighten ing, and the men and women I working in clinics and hospitals i are often so curt, cold, distant, unsympathetic and apparently unfriendly. "Often the poor lonely patient gets the feeling that the activi ties of the medical and nursing staffs are so secret and un touchable that he dare not even ask a question about his findings and his fate. Since we patients are paying the bills, we feel that the doctors should recognize the immediate need for many im provements in the mental and physical handling of patients. Medical organizations and the managers of hospitals and clinics ought to be insisting that some thing be done to improve mat ters." True: Today many good phy sicians everywhere, and heads of most medical organizations are much concerned over these prob lems, and wish they could do something to correct the abuses. The trouble is that one cannot put sympathy, kindliness, cour tesy and tact into a person who hasn't these qualities and does not care to acquire them. Commonly, today, the persons who write me about their un happy experiences with appar ently heartless physicians, nurses or desk-girls, say that if we in medicine do not mend our ways we soon will be punished by the imposition on us of socialized medicine. This may be true, but I just cannot see how this can be expected to give patients a kindlier and more personal type of practice. It should do ust the reverse. One day, when in a foreign land, I watched a physician at tend to perhaps 40 persons in 2 hours. He did not greet them or even look at them. He read on a card, prepared by a nurse, such words as "cough," '"consti pation," "indigestion" and then he wrote on the card 55 or 72 a designation for a medicine. He was a good, kindly man who so disliked this heartless and unscientific and unsatisfac tory assembly-line type of medi cine that he was seriously con sidering giving it up and going into business. He also was tell ing his sons not to go into medicine. Entry, Detainer Case Settled In Court District Court Judge Rawles Moore has ruled in favor of Emma F. Brooks, Eagle Point, after hearing a case charging Ester B. Downing, Eagle Point, with forcible entry and detainer. The suit was brought by Mrs. Brooks, as owner of Brooks cafe in Eagle Point. An arrangement of cedar, gilded leaves, candles and lustered balls were placed on the fireplace mantel. A combination of greenery, cone flowers and laurel berries make up a pillar, and a large Christmas tree and holly greens vere given by Junior depart ment by Wilbur Hunt. The tree was decorated by volunteer stu dents from St. Mary's school. Harold Perkey also donated decorating material. Central ave., Verne Thorpe, pub lic works director, has an nounced. Congestion at the intersection, caused by drivers waiting to make a left turn, sometimes backs up traffic to North River side ave., Thorpe said.
