o Denial of Rapid Hells Canyon Tax Writeoff Sought Q Washington U.R) The Na tional Hells Canyon association has asked the Office of De fense Mobilization to deny a rapid tax writeoff certificate to jthe Idaho Power Co. for con struction of. two dams in the 5 Hells Canyon reach of the Snake river. The association id in a brief there is no assurance that Idaho Power would complete Brown lee and OxbowOams within the five-year period under which a rapid tax writeoff certificate of necessity would apply. LaClc of Proof Seen The association said Idaho or had submitted no proof the dams would aid oational de fense. Mrs. Evelyn N. Cooper, attor ney for the association, said there has been no public reve lation of the estimated cost of the dam3 to be constructed un der a revised licensing order is sued by the Federal Power commission. Mrs. Cooper said the FPC li cense to Idaho Power to build the dams was no assurance they would be completed within the necessary five-year period be cause the entire issue now is be fore the Court of Appeals and may go to the Supreme court for ultimate determination. Spreckles Becomes Jusl Plain Smith Seattle U.R) John Dolf Spreckels III, once an heir to a sugar fortune, has shed his name in Superior court here and be came just plain John D. Smith, salesman. He told Judge CLloyd Shorett he wanted to change his name because employers associated it "with the wealth the family once possessed." He said fellow workers took-him for "a finan cier andjplayboy." Sith now is employed by his brother, Adolph, who operates a custom cabinet shop here. Adolph also is a grandson of the late John D. Spreckels, the sug ar king, who left a fortune to his heirs. Rescuers managed to pull Sallis out alive but by the time they reached Sivley, buried under 10 feet of dirt, he was dead- Fishermen Saved By Coast Guard San Diego (U.R) Three Tuc son, Ariz., fishermen Friday had the Coast Guard to thank for be ing rescued after spending four days adrift in a 22-foot cabin cruiser in the Gulf of California. Attorney Rudolph Stone, 45; Clark Heaslett, 35, president of an electric company, and Ralph Peterson, 50, a carpenter, were picked up Thursday by one of two Coast Guard patrol planes. The men said they had gone out on a two-day fishing trip from their camp near Punto Pe nasco. Mex., Saturday. They caught fish and spent the night on an island. On their way back they encountered heavy seas with waves up to 20 feet.- The boat was unable to make progress and gasoline ran out. Then, fortunately, the weather calmed. Stone said the party was in no danger after the seas calmed. He said there was food and wat er but they rationed it in event of a long stay. " "By .the grace of God and the Coast Guard, here we are," Heaslett said. The men spent the night in a hotel and flew to Tucson Friday. Permit Granted for New Bank at Milwaukie Milwaukie, Ore. (U.R) Wil liam R. Davis, Milwaukie auto dealer, has announced that the state superintendent of banks has granted a permit for a new independent bank here. Davis said he was one of nine signers of the charter request. The bank would be known as the Pioneer Bank of Milwaukie and would be capitalized at $450,000, he said. : No site for the bank building has been chosen. Salem (U.R) State Treasurer Sig Unander has accepted an ap pointment as chairman of the state employes U.S. payroll sav ings and bond drive. New Airplane Shape Gels Air Force Award Washington (U.R) The Air Force presented its Exceptional Service Award Friday to Richard T. Whitcomb for his develop ment of the new "Coke bottle" or "Marilyn Monroe" shape for airplanes. Air, Force Secretary Donald A. Quarles presented the award to Whitcomb, aeronautical re search scientist at the Aeronau tical Laboratory at Langley Air Force Base, Va. The design, which is being incorporated in new supersonic aircraf ts, permits a 25 per cent increase in speed with no in crease in power. APPROPRIATE Grand Rapids, Mich. AGNES HARRISON Gold Hill Gail's Gold Hill market was the first food estab lishment outside of Medford to make arrangements for provid ing chest x-rays for all employ ees. This was done, according to the Jackson county health de partment, to protect the health of their customers. The x-rays were taken during a special Gold Hill clinic a few weeks ago. Past Noble Grands club will have their Christmas party Dec. 19 at the home of Mrs. Lester Parker. Mr. and Mrs. Delos Walker and girls spent last week end at Klamath Falls, visiting with Mrs. Walker's brother, Lawrence Wills and family. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Water house have bought the Paul Riggs place on Fifth ave. Woman's Society of Christian Service met Friday, Dec. 9, at the home of Mrs. J. G. Kofahl with 19 members present. Des sert luncheon was served by Mrs. Millie Walker and Mrs. Roy Cameron, Mrs. Cameron acting in the place of Mrs. Har riet Elliot who was ill. Business meeting was conducted by Mrs. Lawrence Smith, president. Mrs. Frank Carter had charge of the program and Mrs. Glenn Bowen reported on the United Nations. Sixth grade pupils of William Brewster went on a field trip Wednesday to watch the opera tion of the shale pit at the Ideal Cement plant. This is to help them with their study of rocks. He recently resigned as mayor of Gold Hill and Milton Steinmetz was appointed to succeed him. Mrs. George Smith has return ed from Walnut Creek, Calif., where she visited with her mother-in-law,- Mrs. Nellie Smith. On her arrival in Califor nia she learned that Mrs. Smith was confined to the hospital with a broken shoulder.
