o o o o Q Ngws About Books rrarn the Library By MISS HELEN WEBSTER Medford Librarian If the week before Christmas finds you fagged, with much still to be done and ycur ideas for entertainment and decorations all but 'exhausted, visit your Medford Public Library cfor a fresh supply of suggestions. Although lere hg,s been a heavy demand for weeks upon its Christmas oookshclf, there is stifl a good selection of helpful books on hand. Customs Described Oni Oq the library's latest ac quisitions is Maymie Krythe's "All About Christmas," de scribing the customs, legends, and traditions associated with Christmas around the world. Another remarkable book that will deepen our understanding of the worldwide Christmas period of festival and worship is '4000 Years of Christmas", by Earl Count. His pages are crowded with the legendary fig ures and exotic heroes who make up the long Christmas proces sion, yet his main concern lies always with the Child who gave Christmas its name. Unusual Christmas Carols will be found here, also a Christmas Calendar which explains the meaning of each date in the Yule period. Elva Smith and Alice Hazel tine nave compiled for us two excellent collections of poems, stories, and plays from the wealth of lore that has grown up concerning Christmas in their books, "Christmas Book of Legends and Stories," and "Christmas in Legend and Story." Tales Told Teacher, homemaker, crafts man, clubwoman, and child will enjoy the Christmas tales and profit by the new ideas for fun, decorations, food, and programs gathered together in "1001 Christmas Facts and Fancies," by Alfred Carl Hottes. It includes recipes for traditional Christ mas delicacies enjoyed through out the world. Other compila tions that include practical ideas as well as stories, songs, and legends are "The Christmas An nual" and the Christmas issues of "Ideals". The Medford Pub lic Library has several volumes of each of these. ' Also available are the Better Homes and Gardens "Christmas Ideas," and American Homes Magazine's ."Christmas Book," each of which suggests many gay decorations you can make, new holiday recipes, and gifts that can be quickly and easily made at home. Yule Stories Gathered together on the Christmas bookshelf are a num ber of Christmas stories suitable Naval Reservists Plan Family Nighf The families of the 53 officers i and men. of the Navy Keserve Electronics unit here are invit ed to a family night gathering at 7:30 p.m. Monday, it has been announced. The family night is being held in conjunction with the regular drill session of the unit, and the families of the men will be able to observe reservists tak ing training, as well as being provided with any information they may desire about the Navy. The. unit gives general Naval training, as well as advanced training in radar, radio and electronics. Strang farm Sams Valley, included cleaning 1,500 feet of stream bed on Sams creek and construction of about 500 feet of earth dike to change the course of the stream. The stream had been cutting away a 12 foot bank into a field. Technical assistance for the project was given by the Med for office of the U. S. Boys from the Boy's League council drag ged themselves wearily over the , hills in search of a suitable Christmas tree, used to adorn the hall at the north front entrance to our building. It is tradition that, every year, the boys bring in the tree and the tx. L. council is in charge of decorations. The senior football lettermen and senior members of the ral ley squad were invited to the Lions' club football banquet, Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. at the Jackson hotel The banquet was open to the public. Bob Watson, Oregon State college backfield coach and former Medford High athlete, was guest speaker. Passers-by admire the realis tic Nativity scene, which rests on the front lawn of the campus. This scene was; built by Mr. Metzer's last year carpentry class, and Mr. Wolf's art classes painted the figures which the carpentry classes had cut. The Future Nurses of America plan to send small Christmas gifts to the State Mental hospi tal at Salem. These fcifts include powder puffs, doll clotfies for the children, soap, scarves, and handkerchiefs. The Pep club recently made plans for new white skirts, which will be worn for the basketball season. These pleated skirts will add a great deal to the snappy outfits of the Pep clubbers. An organizational meeting of the Jackson County teenage March of Dimes was held Dec. 10. Co-chairman Nancy Adams and Greg Milnes met with stu dent representatives from every high school in the county. Fund raising activities are slated to begin early in January. They will be designed to Have Fun for the Funds You Give. "Follow the cards" was the slogan announcing the Future Homemaker of America Christ mas project. . The members brought . old ' Christmas cards from home and strung them in the hall and pinned them to the bulletin board near the home making room. These cards will be sent to the Shrine hospital for Crippled Children in Portland, to be made into treats for the children. This drive took, the form of class competition, and the losing class has to sponsor the F.H.A. "Crazy Party,,' to he held later on. Seniors are dreamfully hoping to pass their remedial English test as a pre-Christmas present. Some classes are behind others and will not have the test until after the holidays.
