WILSON Q Uniled Presi Correspondent Washington (U.R) Ohio's Gov. Frank J. Lausche will have, ibor trouble if he is serious about seeking next y e a r's D e m o c r atic preside ntial nomination. Labor lead erg blame the governor for at least two u n f o r givable sins. If he act ually goes for Lyie C- Wilson the nomina tion, they will get aJong-sought chance to cut him down to size. Lausche announced this week that he would enter Ohio's presi dential primary as a favorite son candidate. That should shoo all otf,er Democratic hopefuls t2 away from the state. Labor can not lick Lausche on his home grounds. He's been elected gov ernor five times by now, never with more than grudging labor admission that he might do, and more often without even that. There are Democrats who argue that Lausche is no Demo crat but a disguised Republican There are even more Ohio labor leaders who will insist now that the governor is no pal of the unions. Lausche, nevertheless has been unbeatable in Ohio. It is considerably more than likely that Lausche will -win the Ohio presidential primary. Labor Eyes Convention In other states it could be another story. Lausche would not offend labor leaders if he dared cross the Ohio frontier to engage them elsewhere. Crajer Lake Fame Evidence Received The employees of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce art convinced the fame of Crater lake is worldwide. They have evidence to support that con clusion, too. They have had it ever since FDR added to the Firm of Former FTC Chairman Defends Grocers Explosion Damages Building at Eugene Washington (U.R) The law firm of former Federal Trade Commission Chairman Edward F. Howrey is defending a na tional grocery chain accused of violating FTC regulations, it was learned today. The case against the chain Food Fair Stores of Philadelphia originated while Howrey, a Republican, still was FTC chief. A spokesman said, however, that the case was being proces sed in the commission's bureau of litigation when Howrey re signed from the FTC last Sep tember. He said that Howrey never saw any files or records with it. Special Discounts Food Fair operates 200 out lets in the East and does a $400, 000,000 a year business. Food Fair and another chain Giant Food Stores were ac cused by the FTC Nov. 25 of in ducing 11 food manufacturers to give them special discounts. The commission said this was unfair competition. FTC rules provide that no for mer FTC member shall appear as an attorney in any legal pro ceeding "the . files of which came to his personal attention during his employment or on which he performed any work of significant importance." No active Part Seen A" spokesman for Howrey's law firm said that, while it would be "entirely proper" for Howrey to work on the Food Fair case, he didn't think How rey would take an active part in the defense. "Mr. Lewis Gravelle, senior partner of the firm, will handle the arguments before the com mission" he said. The FTC accused Food Fair and the Giant Stores of coerc ing suppliers to grant them spe cial discounts Jo ran anniversary sale, "knowing their competi- I tors would not get equal re bates." Food Fair has denied using any coercion. It also main tains that the discounts were available to all. Eugene (U.R) An explosion, believed caused by seeping gas fumes, shook a neon sign build ing here yesterday causing dam age estimated by the fire depart ment at several thousand dollars. No injuries were reported, al though employees who were eat ing their lunch inside were shaken up. Part of a brick, fire wall was destroyed. Some small fires were started. Firemen said another blast oc curred here late Wednesday, also from gas fumes. The latter blast occurred when gas leaked into a catch basin and a railroad flare ignited it. No damage was reported. But of them all, the aggressively left-of-cen- ter labor leaders have been the most powerful. They have vetoed Democratic candidates before this and the odds that they will be able to repeat next year are 100-to-l or longer. All of this may be why Lausche hesitates to enter pri maries outside Ohio. Great And Small Lausches sins, as labor cata logs them, are great and small. And even trivial. But two of them are underlined in rainbow ink and tagged unforgiveable. No. 1 was marked up m 1950 when Lausche openly favored the re-election of the late Sen Robert A. Taft, Mr. Republican himself, and co-author of the Taft-Hartley Act. Lausche rated Taft a much superior man to his Democratic opponent, Joseph (Jumping Joe) Ferguson, and he let the voters of Ohio know it. Last month Lausche commit ted sin No. 2. The -AFL-CIO, power-house aided by the rail way brotherhoods, was trying by popular vote to amend Ohio's constitution. The amendment would have made it legal in Ohio for unemployed workers to re ceive unemployment compensa tion plus the additional lay-off pay which the automobile indus try has promised under its new CIO contracts. Lausche said he thought the idea of paying people not to work was fantastic. That word "fantastic" did it. The proposed amendment was not merely de feated, it was swamped in op position votes. Since then the word from Ohio has been that labor is out to get Lausche. If he's serious about the presi dential nomination, labor will have its chance.
