OI.R) Back stairs at the Gettysburg White House: It seems wise to some of the people around Mr. Eisenhower, irritating to others, that news men continue to. report the chief execiislive's changeable physical appearanceg during his conval escence. Actually, ' this, practice lg a good indicator of how Mr. Ei senhower is feeling, not only physically, but emotionally, too. When he shows up for work at his postoffice quarters here looking glum and paying no at tention to the people who wave to him, chances are that he is faced with a pressing problem or just plain feels tired. And at this stage of his re cuperation, when he is tired it is a matter of national and even worldwide importance. Mr. Eisenhower can look drawn and almost unhappy one day, and the next morning be a smiling picture of radiant good cheer and mending health. The Republican leaders who saw him last Monday said the President was looking fine and they were net spreading politi cal propaganda. His color was excellent and his facial expres sion indicated a sense of relaxa tion, although he put in one of whis hardest work schedules that ja day. Maj. Gen. Howard Snyder, the President's physician, checks his patient's blood pressure and pulse three times a day. When House GOP leader Jo seph W. Martin Jr. came out of the White House the other morning, he was asked whether there was any disagreement on Thornton Rules on Unemployment Pay Salem (U.R) Unemployment compensation cannot be paid to individuals receiving payments under a retirement plan spon sored or participated in by an employer, under an amendment agreed to by the 1955 Legisla ture and taking effect last Aug. 3, Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton ruled yesterday. The question arose as to the definition of an "employer." Thornton held that the federal government is not an ''em ployer" within the meaning of the unemployment act. Therefore, individuals draw ing retirement pay under a plan participated in by the federal government are not subject to the amendment and may draw compensation for weeks of un employment if otherwise eligible. proposals for 1956 discussed among the Republican legisla tive leaders. The average driver in the United States drives 7.8fin miles per year. Polyethylene Film May Be Universal Wrapping Chicago (U.R) James F. Bernard, sales manager of the Visking Corporation's plastic division at Terre Haute, Ind., told the National Paper Trades association convention here that bags of polyethylene film may become the universal wrapping He put the merits of plastic grocery bags this way: "The housewife could carry home her groceries in a bag that not only would withstand the ride home from the supermar ket but could be re-used many times as a refrigerator bag, a sweater bag, a garbage can liner, a general storage bag, a traveling bag, a bathing suit bag, and for one of a number of varied uses polyethylene' has around the home." Tracy Crum, Honored The Medford YMCA board of directors this week adopted a resolution in appreciation of service of the late Tracy H. Crum, who was a member of the board. The resolution said, in part, Mr. Crum "as always keenly interested in the success of the program" of the YMCA and "al though busily engaged in rais ing a family and the practice of law and active in the work of his church and other community affairs, he remained always will ing to give his time and efforts to this association."
