3 FOttHTTErf MEDTORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Ke s roew on't Bow Out Before March Washington (U.R) President Eisenhower's backers in New Hampshire have been assured that Mr. Eisenhower will not bow out as a possible 1958 candidate before their March 13 primary, it wag reported authoritatively today. This assurance will permit them to run as pro-Eisenhower delegates to the Republican Na tional Convention without risk- Lausche Leaves Door Open for Demo Nomination , Columbus, O. (U.R) Ohio's popular Gov. Frank J. Lausche left the door open today for the Democratic presidential nomina tion. . The five-term governor made his long-expected announcement Wednesday that he would be a candidate for Ohio's convention delegates in the state's primary next May. Lausche did not say "yes" or no ' when asked if he planned to campaign for delegates in oth ' er states. He indicated he would not, and said his "present m tention" was to limit his cam paigning to Ohio, where he will seek 58 delegates in the May 8 primaries. Position Unchanged The 60-year-old governor said ) his position "is not changed" in commenting upon the announce ment. The inference was that he stood on his often-made state ments of the past that he might allow his name to be used in the primary as a favorite son to pre vent "selfish political bosses" from gaining control of the dele gation for "trading purposes." The governor's best chance of winning the nomination next August probably would be from a deadlock in the convention. Then he might be a compromise q choice, acceptable to the South because of his generally conserv ative views, acceptable to other sections because of his demon strated ability to win in a big industrial state. Suspect Arrested in w in oFortland Bank Holdup . Portland (U.R) A suspect was arrested today in' connection with the Nov. 23 holdup of the main office of the First National Bank of Portland, the FBI an nounced. The suspect was identified as Henry Clay Wyatt, 30, described by the FBI as a self-employed cabinet maker. Officers said two witnesses to the robbery identi fied Wyatt irPa city police line up. On Nov. 23 a man shoved a note to a clerk in the bank de manding cash. The man escaped with S1019. A federal complaint was sign u ed by U. S. Commissioner Rob ert. A. Leedy. Joseph Santoiana. special agent in charge of the FBI here, said the suspect, had lived at several addresses here and had lived at Klamath Falls from 1950 to 1953. Damage Suit Filed In Circuit Court A damage suit asking S52 805. was filed in circuit court Tuesday by Fred W. Hayden, Eugene, formerly of Medford, against Raymon Leigh McComb Jr., Rogue River, and his step father, Vern V. Helbig. Hayen asks S50.000 general damages. $488.55 special dam . ages, and 52,316 for loss of earnings. (U.R) Flower arranging and gardening have taken their place in the realm of higher education at w least at Michigan State univer- Flower enthusiasts, who face busy speaking Schedules before club groups, go to "college" at MSU for special instructor-training courses. Women enrolled in the courses later conduct short courses in - their home towns and address gardening groups and women's dubs. " Laboratory sessions in the program at MSU, sponsored by the Woman's National Farm and Garden association, include "technique of teaching flower - arrangement," "effective public speaking" and other matters. 0 o nampsnire Backers Assure ing repudiation if the President decides later against seeking a second trem. Sufficient Authority The report came from a reli able informant who did not claim that the go-ahead came from Mr. Eisenhower himself. This source did say, however, that it originated with an admin istration lieutenant with suffic ient authority to assure pro-Eisenhower delegates that they would not find themselves with out a candidate when the New Hampshire votes are cast. It was not suggested that en couragement of pro-Eiserihower forces in New Hampshire means the President has decided to run again. If New Hampshire should elect Eisenhower delegates and Abbott Defense Takes New Shift1 in Try To Prove Innocence Oakland, Calif. (U.R) At torneys for Burton W. Abbott shifted to a "new subject" today in their efforts to prove their client is innocent of the kidnap slaying of 14-year-old Stephanie Bryan. However, there was no ad vance notice on what the "new subject" would be. Yesterday Charles F. Munds, 55-year-old San Pablo grocer, testified that he saw Stephanie with two other men several hours after the state claims she was kidnaped by Abbott. With Two Men Munds positively identified Enthusiasm Oyer Gaitskell Choice Dampened by Act London (U.R) The brusque resignation from the British La bor Party by a Socialist mem ber of the House of Lords today dampened press and public en thusiasm over the election of Hugh Gaitskell as leader of the party. Gaitskell, 49, staunchly pro American rightwinger, succeed ed to the post vacated last week by Clement R. Attlee by winning a smashing first ballot victory in the elections by Labor members of Parliament. He polled 157 of 267 votes, easily outdistancing left winger Aneurin Bevan and the middle roader Herbert Mor rison. Lord Amwell Quits The one sour note amid the almost unanimous acclaim for his victory was struck by Lord Amwell. The 79-year-old lord announced: "I am . . .' withdraw ing my name from the party." Amwell, called the ""Cockney peer" because of his working class background, added that if Morrison had been elected "I would never have done it." However, Amwell long has been a "rebel" in Labor ranks and his abrupt departure appeared to carry little political signifi cance. Bevan Vote Disturbs More disturbing to Laborite circles was the surprising 70 votes polled by Bevan, leader of the leftwing faction of the party and outspoken critic of the United States. Bevan is an avowed foe of Gaitskell's and at one point sought to head off his election by offering to throw his votes to Morrison. Politicians expected the vote would encourage Bevan to op pose any attempt by Gaitskell to swing party policy to the right. Thus, the long-standing feud between the two could lead to a damaging rift in the party. New Hampshire sends 14 dele gates to the convention. Gov, Lane Dwinnell already has an nounced he will run for delegate-at-large, listed on the ballot as "favorable" to the renomination of Mr. Eisenhower. Consent Required Under its first-in-the-nation primary, candidates for New Hampshire's national convention delegation can run as favorable to a presidential candidate, pledged to a candidate or un pledged. If pledged, the candi- the" girl's photo as that of the "worried looking" girl he saw sitting in a car in front of his store on the night of April 28. The grocer said Stephanie was with two men neither of whom was Abbott. Munds as positive in his iden tification of Stephanie's full-face photo as the girl he saw in the car. However, he faltered on cross-examination by assistant prosecutor Folger Emerson and admitted he only saw the girl's profile and that was inside a car some 18 feet away at night. Another defense witness was Mrs. Hilda Frakes, the former baby sitter for Abbott's son. She testified that Abbott's wife, Georgia, had sweaters and other clothing which could have matched the fibers found in the defendant's car. Fibers Match Clothes A state criminologist has tes tified that fibers matched the clothes worn by Stephanie when she disappeared on her way home from school on April 28. Abbott, 27-year-old University of California student, is accused of snatching the girl into his car, murdering her and burying her body behind his cabin in Trinity county. Abbott has admitted he drove to Trinity county on the day of the kidnaping, but maintains he left Berkeley several hours be fore Stephanie disappeared. Box Car Number Mystery Unraveled Omaha, Neb: (U.R) The Un ion Pacific railroad has let out siders in on the secret of all those numbers stencilled on the sides of box cars. Every car has a serial number, for example U. P. 500077. Ca pacity in pounds is "capy 100 000." The load limit and the empty weight are also there, the numbers introduced by "Id Lmt" and "Lt wt." If you'd like to know where the boxcar was last weighed when empty, you'll also find that information. The birth date and the builder of the car are on the side. A letter code tells the uses: B box car, A automobile, R refriger ator. A code of A-50-21 would mean, for example, an automo bile carrier that can accommo date 50 tons and is the 21st style of that boxcar designed. Other code clues: EXW ex treme width of car; H height from rail to highest point; IL inside length; IW inside width; IH inside height; and .CU FT the cubic feet of loading capacity. Dr. Dwaine Marvick, a politi cal scientist, interviewed 200 professional and administrative employees of a federal agency in Washington and came up with j three types institutionalists, ' specialists and hybrids. j The institutionalists, almost to i a man, expected to work out j their lives as civil servants, us-! ually in an executive capacity, i They placed greatest emphasis j on such considerations as pres-; tige, security, advancement, sal- i ary and influence. j The specialists looked forward to careers in non-executive jobs ' without caring very much ; whether in government or pri- j vate business. They were. hap piest when the job offered them a chance to use their specialized training and an opportunity to learn. The hybrids, who resembled the specialists in education and experience, tended to be more like - the institutionalists in career plans, both looking for ward to long government serv ice. . A prospective candidate can be entered without his con sent, but he can withdraw his name if he wishes. There has been no indication whether Mr. Eisenhower will be entered in this contest. Chains Needed on Government Camp Rd. Salem (U.R) Chains were re quired for motorists traveling to Timberline and Government Camp, the State Highway De partment said today. An inch of snow fell overnight at Gov ernment Camp and 2 inches' at Timberline. Chains also were required at Cascade Locks and Troutdale, where silver thaw was reported. Silver thaw also was reported at Detroit where chains were required. Chains were advised at Warm Springs junction, with an inch of new snow. Spots of ice were reported at Wilson river summit, Sunset summit, Portland, Siskiyou, Green Springs, Santiam pass, Willamette Pass, Chemult, Bly, Brothers and Lapine. The 16-year-old youths, one from Jacksonville and one from Shady Cove, were remanded to juvenile authorities after their arrest by sheriff's officers on a charge of auto theft. They allegedly took a pick-up truck owned t?y ftay Coleman, Jacksonville, and drove it a short time Saturday night. Frank Pat Lee, 21, Washou gal, Wash., was jailed after re turning to Medforc, of his own volition. He is charged with ob taining money under false pre tenses and is being held pending receipt of a federal bureau of investigation report. Grant A. McEachen, 50, of 330 North Front st., is charged with being drunk in a public place. He was arrested on the first floor of the courthouse. Claude A. Beavor, route 1, Grants Pass, was jailed by state police in lieu of payment of an I overload fine levied in Ashland justice court. Look for Detroit Man Detroit U.R) Police and superstitious horseplayers were looking for Roosevelt Williams today. Firemen summoned to Wil liams' house by a neighbor Wednesday night found a 55 gallon still, three barrels of mash, five "dream books" and 18 pads of mutuel slips. The firemen said six persons called while they were there and asked for the day's "lucky number." John Day Projects Said Not Feasible Portland (U.R) North Pacific Division Army Engineers today S2id further flood control im provements along the John Day river in Oregon were "not feasi ble." The engineers' report added that "neither are there any mul tiple purpose storage projects for flood control and related water uses which are feasible for development at this time." The engineers admitted that "some flood control benefits might be derived in connection with possible future irrigation storage developments." Local protective works to pro vide channel improvement and to eliminate bank erosion at critical points between Mount Vernon and the mouth of the North Fork of the John Day and along the North and South forks were authorized by the 1950 flood control act.
