0 Gifts Piling Up For Expected Prisoner Return Friedland, Germany U.R The flow of West German re turned prisoners to this repatri ation camp has stopped for the time being but the flood of pack ages and gifts from all parts of Europe continues. . Camp officials reckoned the total donations so far as valued at more than $286,000 and said there is no end in sight. Some of the gifts are addressed 1o war prisoners whose return is expected but most are donated to unknown repatriates. One German woman sent the carefully laundered shirts and socks of her missing husband to the camp. "I received word from several of the returnees that my hus- band died on the eastern front," she wrote. "Now that I know he will never return from Russia, want the next man released from the Sverdlovsk camp to have the things I was saving for him An eight-year-old boy in northern Germany wrapped u his coin-filled piggy bank and mailed it to the camp. U.R) A Cornell University potato specialist says atomic waste material may some day give us spuds that will stay sproutless in storage for several months. Dr. Ora Smith said that re search at Brookhaven Rational Laboratory has shown that irra diation of gamma rays from atomic waste while it's an ex pensive control method does keep potatoes from sprouting. Treated potatoes already have stayed sproutless for a year and a half, he said. It's estimated this would cost between eight and nine cents a bushel on a commer cial setup. Association states, the value of all church property has increased from $5, 235,000,000 to an estimated $7, 846,000,000 in 1955. New religious construction totaled $409,000,000 in 1950, and there has been a continuing up swing in such construction, ex cept for the year 1952. Present estimates are that 1955 will set an all time record of. $700,000, 000 in new construction.
