A psycholo gist is advocating a new school of phsychological thought and action. Emerson C o y 1 e, psychology teacher and counsellor at Brook lyn College, invited his fellow scientists to say "to what extent, if any, has psychology undercut old-fashioned self reliance and personal accountability." His idea was that psycholo gists have gone too far in "un derstanding" the socially unac ceptable acts and failures of their patients. Value Undetermined "Understanding," he said, can go so far as to carry the implica tion that psychologists accept "deviant behavior." He added that there was "room for a psy chology" based on "an insistence on toeing the mark." Otherwise, "the value of meeting stand ards" is undermined. He had in mind the popular school" of child psychology which seeks, at any cost, to spare the child from becoming "inhibited." People take it so seriously, "one dare n&t spank the child until a psychology book has been con sulted." In high schools and colleges, teachers send students to psy chologists lor some such reason as these: "Student x has cheated on my examination. I think he is disturbed." "Student is charged with statutory rape. I think he's disturbed'?' "Might it not be that disc'ipli ary ;.ction rather than 'suppor tive therapy" is the first order of business?" Coyle asked. Discipline Unknown Concept O "Z wonder to what extent poor or non-existent study habits, poor spelling, difficulties with mathe matics and languages in high school and college may not be attributed to parental and-or per sonal laxity ''don't push your child' rather than to unresolved oedipal complexes or to hatred of the father image or authority or society." He used to think, he said, that a psychologist should never let a person taking his professional counsel, know he disapproved of that person's behavior, no matter how deviate." But now, after much experi ence, he feels that with "a sig nificant number" of the persons who seek his professional help, "the concept of a discipline in general and of self-discipline in particular is a foreign and un known concept." In short, rather than insistence upon adherence to standards having failed or or having caused maladjust men, adherence to standards has not been required or tried in all too many instances. Directors Elected To Ashland Club Ashland Four directors were elected at a meeting of the Siski you Knife and Fork club here recently. Those elected are Dr. Jack In gram and Dr. Lee Melish of Med ford, and John Cotton and Harry Skerry of Ashland. Skerry, president of the club, announced that members have voted to continue starting meet ings at 7:30 p.m. to accommodate members living in Medford.
