Q 53 G GM Policy Hearings End Afier 5 Weeks Washington (U.R) Sen. Joseph C. O'Mahoney, who has just completed an investigation of General Motors Corp. busin c practices, said Saturday the. FedeQl government, instead of the state, shouft charter all corporations engaged iin inter state and foreign business. The Wyoming Democrat's Senate Monopoly subcommittee wound up five weeks of hear ings Friday on 4he relationship of Giant General Motors to the National Economy. "My contention regarding cor porations engaged in interstate and foreign business is that their charters should be issued by the , federal government," O'Mahoney told the United Press. "These charters should set forth In plain words the powers, duties and responsibil ities of these corporations." He declined to say whether federal chartering would be a part of a legislative program resulting from the subcommit tee's hearings. Schulz Sunday December 11, 1955 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN Active Combat Divisions Increased From 18 to 19 Washington (U.R) The Army has increased the number of active combat divisions it will maintain next year from 18 to 19 but will reduce its forces in the Far East. The 19-division goal an nounced Friday represents an increase of two over the strength the Army originally planned to maintain under the administration's ''new look" mil itary strategy. The Army currently has 20 divisions. Its present strength is about 1,100,000 men, but it is scheduled to drop to 1,027,000 by the middle of next year. When its strength was or dered cut back to. 1,027,000 men under the new plan the Army in tended to maintain 17 combat divisions in the next fiscal year. Later, however, it revised its goal upward to 18 and now plans to maintain 19. Deactivate Groups The Army's revised plans call for deactivation of the 23rd In fantry Division in the Panama Canal Zone, and the 71st Infan try division at Fort Lewis, Wash. The Army, however, will acti vate a new airborne division next June at Fort Campbell, Ky. Mrs. Ethel Park Richardson, 72, of Los Angeles, Cal., who travels all over the country by trailer to gather material on her specialty, won the $100,000 on her second try on the television program, "The Big Surprise." After her heartbreaking miss la:$t week, when she did not know the Indian name for a wilderness trail, Mrs. Richard- scm last night breezed through five parts of her big question, ai&d then as suspense mounted, slie sang in a quivering voice tte first verse of "The Streets of Laredo" andwas announced a .5100,000 winner. Joyce Brothers, a pretty New York psychologist, who are the only two persons ever to win the big one on the quiz program, "The $64,000 Question.!-' Navy Announces Plans For Smaller Atomic Submarine Washington (U.R) The Navy plans to build a small atomic submarine with a revolutionary type hull. It will be more man euverable and faster underwater than the Nautilus the first atomic-powered submarine. The vessel will have a flat sided, fish-like hull design that may lead to a revolution in the shape of underwater craft. It will be about half the size of the 3,000-ton Nautilus and more comparable to the efficient at tack class submarines of World War II. ' The maximum underwater speed of the new sub will exceed the 25 knots credited . to the Nautilus when it is submerged. Oiher Ships The Navy also announced that three conventional diesel-power-ed submarines in- this year's ship-building program will be changed to the new hull design. The atomic sub also is a change in plans and not an addition. The Navy said the new small sub will be "superior to the Nautilus, Sea Wolf or any of its other nuclear-powered predeces sors in all aspects of its under water characteristics." It will be powered by one instead of two propellers. The new atomic sub will be built by the Electric Boat Divi sion of General Dynamids Corp., at Groton, Conn. One of the revised convention al subs will be built at the Portsmouth, N. H., Naval ship yard and the second at the Ing alls Shipbuilding Corp. at Pas cagoula, Miss. The contract for the third has not yet been awarded. the Third Marine Division. This will result in deactivation of the Seventh Regimental Combat Team on Okinawa. The 508th Airborne Regimen tal Combat Team will be pulled out of Japan, starting next June to become a part of the. new air borne division at Fort Campbell.
