Comment On This and That By HARMAN United Pre Washington OJ.R) Don't get sassy with any man you hap pen to meet in the street who is wearing a green felt beret cocked over his right eye. He'll be all man, and if he's in a vile mood he may haul off and clobber you one. Like as not, Harman Nichols if you look him over you'll find that he sports "jump wings" on his chest and happens to be one of the U. S. Army's most versatile sold iers. The beret was not of the tough man's choosing, but it is part of his new official get-up. The soldier with the beret will be a member of She of the 15 iew teams which comprise the ?7th Special Forces Group all airborne. If the shooting busi ness comes again, this fellow and his team-mates will have the job of organizing and directing "pro-Democratic" guerrilla bands behind the lines. Colorado Base. The home station of the new outfit is at Fort Bragg, N. C, but the vanguard at the moment is located at the Mountain and Cold Weather Training Com mand at Fort Carson, Colo. Not every soldier can make the grade. The man in the green beret has to be a sly one, and, (actually, you may never bump into him on the street. This guy is handpicked. He may be a medic, a weapons or demolition expert, a linguist, a radio operator, or all of these rolled into one? His special training starts when he volunteers for paratroop jump-school, after eight weeks of rough and tumble basic train ing. If man is high up in his class-s a parachuter he can vol unteer for the Special Forces. Ahead of the lads who have the courage to raise a hand on this detail are months and months of rugged training. Some make It, some don't. Men here are separated from boys. Thorough Training First, there is a half year course in psychological warfare. Later, the tough boys get schooling in mountain climbing, Rules: Buy a new Ford Car or Truck by December 16th. Then write a letter in 25 words or less ''Why I Bought a New Ford." The medic team, for example, has to be able to perform amputations in the field and clip out an ailing appendix, or rip out an infected tonsil. In addition, each fellow has to be an experienced butcher. He must be able to dissect a chicken or break up the shank of a steer. He must learn how to live off the land and shoot or fish for his own living, if necessary. The line isn't very long, men. It forms on the left, as usual. Harriman Not Gagged In Talk at Eugene Eugene (U.R) Dr. O. Mere dith Wilson, president of the University of Oregon, and Dr. William C. Jones, dean of ad ministration, today emphasized that no "gag" had been placed on Gov. Averell Harriman of New York when he spoke on the campus recently. Dr. A. L. Strand, president of Oregon State College, said earl ier that Harriman's speech was a "flop" because he avoided poli tics. Dr. Wilson lauded Dr. Strand's open invitation to politicians of all stripes to speak on the Cor vallis campus and confirmed that the same policy prevails at the University. He said the only re striction placed on political speakers was to ask them to re frain from campaigning for any individual candidates but to "clarify major policy issues." Dr. Jones said both political parties were asked not to turn school assemblies into political rallies by filling the platfprm with non-speaking party .leaders or by distributing party leaflets. Nine Slot Machines Seized at Coos Bay Coos Bay (U.R) Nine slot machines were confiscated by county authorities yesterday in a raid on the Coos Bay Elks club. The distribution is in prepara tion for the change-over Jan. 1 to the new schedule adopted by the 1955 Legislature. Active claimants already have received their changed determi nations; and the remainder will get them by mail next week. This is but one feature of the amended unemployment law, most of which goes into effect next year and for which an ex tra appropriation to hire addi tional personnel has been' au thorized by the State Emergency Board. Higher Weekly Checks A study based on earnings of 20,000 claimants during the sum mer indicates 60 to 65 per cent will get highly weekly checks, while nearly a third will get smaller amounts. Half of the latter group will be ineligible because of the requirement for $700 minimum base year earn ings or at least 37 times the weekly amount. A small group will receive about the same size check, but the average is ex pected to increase from $22 to around $29 or $30 a week.
