Horticultural Group Protests Tree Tax; Supports Sales Tax Two resolutions, one protest ing the taxation of fruit trees and another supporting a sales tax to be used to relieve prop erty taxes were passed at a Cor vallis meeting of the Oregon Horticultural society, last week'. About 1,500 growers, scien tists, distributors and marketers attended the two-day meetings. A standing committee was ap pointed to take the protest against taxation of fruit trees and a protest against agricultur al projects being used as an Ore gon tax base to the next session of the legislature. Check One other horticultural products, stimulated by the recent tax on fruit trees, is discriminatory to farmers according to Cliff B. Cordy, Jackson county agent. Orville Hamilton, Central Point, was elected second vice president of the society. David Lowry, Phoenix, was reelected as a trustee. The society voted to purchase about 10 acres of land near the Oregon Horticultural experi ment station north of Corvallis, and donate the use of it to the experiment station. The pur chase was made with funds that the society has had in trust for several years. Spatz Awarded, Ward Spatz, 1036 Reddy ave., was awarded a silver trophy cup for outstanding contribu tions to horticulture over a per iod of years. Spatz was one of the organizors and original members of the .Oregon Agri cultural advisory council. He has been interested in horticulture for 35 years, is now president of the Oregon fruit growers league and has been a director of the league for 20 years. . . He re-organized and vitalized the Oregon Horticultural society when it was a dying organiza tion and has aided the organiza tion's growth. i I The cup was presented to Spatz by F. E. Price, dean of the school of agriculture at Ore gon State College. The cup was originally donated to the society by David Lowry. Body Unearthed From Crude Tomb Casper, Wyo. (U.R) A body believed that of a young house wife missing for more than two years was unearthed from a crude concrete tomb in the base ment of a home here yesterday Police Chief C. J. Carter said the body may be that of Mrs. Barbara Alexander, 27, who dis appeared from her . home here on July 13, 1953. The body was found in the basement of the house where she lived with her husband James Alexander about 50, at the time of her disappear ance. " Alexander, a former high school teacher here and now a Worland, Wyo., subcontractor, was present when a team of po lice using pneumatic drills dug into the basement today. Carter said at the time of his wife's disappearance, Alexander told friends and relatives that his wife had "gone on a trip." Equalization Board Discusses Recent Laws Laws passed at the last ses sion of the legislature to unify board practices throughout the state were discussed and clari fied at a meeting in Salem, Dec. 5, County Judge Rodney Keating announced yesterday. Keating and E. H. Singmaster, Ashland, returned Monday from the State Tax commission spon sored school for equalization board members. Arnold Bohnert, Central Point, third member of the Jackson county board of equalization, did not attend. . About 40 board members from Western Oregon counties attend ed the school, Keating said.
