Several thousand well-wishers were on hand to greet Paz and broke through police lines to surround embracing mother and son, both of whom shed tears oi joy. Paz was returning from exile in the United States to reclaim his newspaper, La Prensa, which had been confiscated by Peron. SCIENCE AT WORK New York (U.R) Many peo pie are fat because being fat servi)a useful, purpose from the infantile viewpoint of their un conscious minds. Dr. Bernard V. Strauss, psychiatrist and teacher of psychiatry, told an audience of physicians. "There is the individual whose major orientation to me seems to center about oral activities," said the doctor. "He loves to eat, drink, talk, smoke( suck, bite, chew, swallow, incorporate. "For him food represents in take in a symbolic as well as an actual sense. It means adding to himself. It means getting bigger, being stronger. It means what the popular expression signifies to throw one's weight around." Strauss spoke also of "the indi vidual for whom food intake is specifically equated with the warm . feeling of love," of being Jield, of being protected, of being safe. He needed such an omnipotent defense to ward off what for him may well have been an utterly intolerable realization of his vul nerability, his precarious .de pendence on the will and fancy of someone he feared and hated. In his compulsive eating he is lord and master. No one can make him do anything." Treatment Complex In adults, obesity "may be an outgrowth of a childhood prob lem specifically centered about feeding." But it isn't as simple as that, from the view of the physicain seeking to thin a fat patient and thus preserve his health. The reason it isn't is that psychologic reaction to the state of obesity itself is a common occurrence." These are taken into the dy-' namics of the mind and have many expressions, Strauss said in outlining some of them. He then 'warned the physicians that it "is not always a safe and harm less procedure to attempt to re move forcibly or dramatically a longstanding, tenaciously pre served symptom." Dr. Strauss began his lecture on the premise that most physi cians these days accept the pow ers of mind and body but then give the obese patient a rou tine physical examination and laboratory tests and then, with out further ado, put her on a standard treatment regimen. Sometimes she doesn't stay put. and the scale tells the story. Joint Responsibility Held in Plane Crash Washington (U.R) The Su preme Court has held that gov ernment airport tower operators and an Eastern Airlines pilot shared the blame for a 1949 crash that killed 56 persons here. The decision, handed down Monday, entitles the estates of the victims to bring suit against the airline as well as the govern ment. As much as 52,000,000 in damages may be involved. - In another case yesterday, the court agreed to decide whether Nebraska's "right-to-work" ' law and union shop provisions of the federal Railway Labor Act are in conflict. It will be the first time the high court has reviewed any of 17 controversial state laws which forbid compulsory union membership. Man's Hobby Violates Regulations in Iowa Elizabethtown, 111. (U.R) J. T. Hearell, a former sheriff has an unusual hobby. He obtained a flag which flew over the Capitol in Washington, D.C., and started it on the rounds to the various states, asking that it be flown over the capitol buildings and returned to him. , So far, 37 states have obliged Hearell, but Iowa turned down his request. The flag is 5-by-10 feet, and Iowa regulations call for flags of only 5-by-8 feet to be flown over its capitol. The committee's meeting date is the first Tuesday of each month. ' Under this agenda, the com mittee will devote the January and February meetings to tech nical aspects of elections, affect ing largely . the secretary of state's office and the county clerks of Oregon's 36 counties. OJ.R) The Il linois Association of County Clerks planned to honor Charles Lowry for his 41 years service to Kane county. The ceremony at the group's convention was to be a surprise, and delegates were cautioned to keep the plans a secret from Lowry. They kept the secret so well that the 'ceremony had to . be postponed. Lowry checked out of his hotel and left town, never knowing he was to be honored. NAACP Leader Found Murdered in Texas Gonzales, Tex. (U.R) The beaten' and badly , burned body of Herbert Johnson, 60, leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Gonzales, was found late Monday beside the burned out hulk of his automobile. Sheriff L. O. McGinty said today that he hadn't found out anything about the murder. But he said he doubted that "race trouble" was involved in the killing. "Everything has been mighty peaceful," he said. "Apparently he didn't have any enemies. That's what all the folks tell us."
