Over Talent
O Eagle Point Eagle Point
high nudged out Talent 32 to 28
here last night in a tight defense
basketball game.
Free shots made the difference
in the scoring. The Eagles got
seven field goals to the Bull
dogs' eight but from the gift
stripe made 18 out of 29 tries
while Talent got 12 for ,25.
Talent used a zone defense
most of the time and Eagle Point
chose to try to go around it. The
Eagles used man to man defense
and managed to pick up their
men well.
Gary Foran of EP was the
standout of the mix, picking off
more than his . share of the re
bounds and was all over the
Qfloor during the night. He led
scoring with 10 points.
Quarter scores all favored
Eagle Point 9 to 8, 16 to 14 and
23 to 20.
Talent won the jayvee hassle
38 to 31. o

Highlight Cage Week End
Tussles between the No. 1 and
No. 2 schools in Oregon last sea
son will highlight a program of
nine games involving seven
Jackson county preps this week
end.
The top attractions are battles
between Medford and Eugene
highs on Friday and Saturday
night. Both games will be at the
senior high gymnasium here.
Eugene was Class A state champ
ion for 1955 and Medford was
runner-up. to the Axemen in the
state tournament.
Jacksonville and Eagle Point
start off the week end with a
conflict at Eagle Point on Thurs
day. The two quintets come to
gether again Friday at Jackson
ville. Crater high will take to the
road, playing at Oakridge on
Friday and Saturday. A Fri
day contest will find Ashland
host to Fortuna,' Calif. On Satur
day, Phoenix will entertain
Yreka, Calif., and Prospect will
journey to Canyonville.
Jaycees Play
Medford junior varsity vies
tonight, meeting the Rogue River
varsity at Rogue River.
Of interest to fans who want
some basis to compare teams
will be three games outside the
county. Fortuna will : play at
Grants Pass on Saturday night.
Brookings will play Illinois Val
ley at Cave Junction and the
two clubs Square off at Brook
ings on Saturday. Klamath Falls
will be "at home" to Reno, Nev.,
for two week end games.
Both the Eugene Axemen and
the Black Tornado are without
the regulars and the great height
that carried them to high honors
last year. But each has a num
ber of lettermen and have called
up boys from strong junior var
sity aggregations. Medford has
five lettermen on hand and Eu
gene has three players back from
its state title squad. Eugene is
drawing from an unbeaten jay
vee crew. Medford junior var
sity last season had almost that
good a record.
Reinking Drills
Letterman Ed Reinking has
now joined the Tornado for full
time drill. He had been hobbled
by a fractured ankle in foot
ball. He's still limping but has
told Coach Frank Roelandt that
the ankle doesn't hurt. Dick
McLaughlin is still sidelined
from regular drill by a pulled
leg muscle suffered last week.
Roelandt stated that the Tor
nado this week is ' aiming at
polishing up its game. 'Condi
tioning is still getting attenton
because the crew is not yet in
top ' physical shape. Five quar
ters of tough scrimmage were
played last night and the Tor
nado practiced also on its press
ing game. ; '
The Eugene club is expected
to be a hard running club. The
Axemen have played two games,
beating Benson of Portland 63
to 53 and Albany 49 to 46. Med
ford will have its first full
games against the Axemen, hav
ing played only in the jamboree
last week end.
