G o O In The Day's News Friday, December 2, 135 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE ?D By FRANK JENKINS More on the White House con ference on education: A subcommittee report calls on the federal government to KEEP OUT OF LOCAL school affairs. In "art, it says: "The contact of the federal govern ment should be confined to STAT level contacts and not made directly with local school boards. The report represents the con census of the nearly 2,000 dele gates, since it came through a series of round-table discussions before being presented to the general session. o TD LIKE to go a little farther. I'd like to keep the federal government out of our schools at the STATE as well as the local level. Even if it hurts, let's fi nance our own schools with our own money. AFTER all, you know, what the federal government GIVES i it must first take out of OUR pockets. And When we send money to Washington it comes back to us BADLY SHRUNKEN.o TD LIKE to add that what has been said here is my personal opinion. Here is Mother and quite different opinion: Michigan's Democratic? gov ernor G. Mennen Williams BLASTS President Eisenhower's education program this morning 'as 'inadequate and a mockery.' He calls for a five-year program of federal aid to education with MORE THAN 16 BILLION DOLLARS of federal money to be spent on it." j you saw a stray unlicensed dog in your neighborhood you d have to call up your senator in Wash ington to get the animal picked up and sent to the pound. Senator Humphrey of Minne sota belongs to this federal-gov-erument-do-all wing of the Dem ocratic party. So does Senator j Magnuson of Washington. So do Oregon's SenatorMorse and Sen-; ator Neuberger. And many others. T ET'S get another point clear. -i As individuals, nothing can; be said against any of these i men. They are all worthy citi zens and pleasant persons to meet. Young and glamorous "Soapy" Williams is as agree able a character as one could hope to encounter. No one can help liking him. If he chose to do so, Senator Humphrey could charm the birds dff a tree. There is no pleasanter companion than Sen ator Magnuson. Senator Morse has a brilliant mind and an able tongue. If you're pretty sure that black is black and would like0to make a bet on it, you'd better stay away from Senator Morse. If you give him a fair chance, he'll be apt to convince von that black is WHITE. Sen ator Neuberger can be a charm ing member of any group one might name. UT GOVERNOR Williams young and handsome and rich, good naturedly known as "Soapy," because he is related on both sides of the house to two big soap families, the Mennens and the Williams belongs to the wing of the Democratic party that believes in government-do-everything - for - everybody. He wants the federal government to run the schools. He wants the federal government to run the power plants. He has never said so, but I sus pect that if it came t an issue he'd want the federal govern ment to RUN THE DOG CATCHER'S OFFICE qso that if B Wc'ro not considering these men as private individuals. We must consider them as lea'ders ohn represent an issue. The issue they represent is pretty well dramatized by young "Soapv" Williams' call for a FIVE "-YEAR PROGRAM OF FEDERAL AID TO EDUCA TION, with more than 516,000,- 000.000 to be spent in getting the nose of the federal govern ment camel under the education tent. The idea they represent is that government should be centered in Washington, and not in our statehouses, our courthouse and our citv halls. Governor Wil liams' crack this morning is in teresting because it reveals the desire on the part of those who believe as he does to TAKE CONTROL OF EDUCATION TO WASHINGTON. So far. we've been reasonably successful in retaining control of education at home. Personally I hope we can KEEP IT THERE. o . SEE . . .
