These were the "shockers" as the Dec. 1 curtain went up on the court season Thursday night: Detroit dumping Notre Dame. 77-71; Butler nipping Wisconsin; 67-63; and St. Joseph's of Phila- delphia drubbing Fordham, 89- NCS Victor North Carolina State, No. 4 nationally and Dayton, No. 6, scored easy wins as their giant Ail-American candidates tested out the new rule that widened the free throw lanes to 12 feet this season. N.(g State cruised to an 83-63 decision over Florida State. Day ton was held to a 28-23 halftime edge by PeDperdine but ran wild in the secd half for a 75-35 win. WHAT WHISKEY! Except for a pause during the Christmas vacation period the Saturday program . will be con ducted morning and afternoon through March 11 with coaches and physical education instruc tors in charge at each school. Activities will begin this Sat urday at McLoughlin and Hed rick junior high schools and Jackson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Washington and Jefferson grade schools. TJhe senior high school gym, however will be closed to recreation activity this week end. . Basketball leagues will, be set up at the senior high by Lee Ragsdale0 physical education su pervisor. Regularly scheduled games will start on Dec. 10. Only senior high students are eligible. Varied Activities At the junior highs there will be basketball instruction and in tramural games. Tumbling, vol leyball, badminton or other ac tivity suited to the groups are planned. Grade schools will have inforr Winters Paces Pilot Triumph Portland (U.R) Flashy Jim my Winters, returning after three years in the Army, paced Portland's Pilots to a 66-53 bas ketball win over Portland State last night as the 1953-58 season got started. - Winters, ball hawking like his old self, racked up 20 points while fellow guard Scrivens chipped in with 16 and Bob Altenhofen added 15. Paul Poetsch had 15 for Portland State. There will be occasional challenge games against teams from oth er schols. Special contest plays, free play and basket shooting are on the program. Boys will be divided into similar age groups for informal games to avoid injury and to avoid smaller boys from being crowded out. Gyms will be open from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. December 17 will be the last Saturday of activity be fore Christmas and programs will be resumed on Jan. 7. Exception is . Lincoln gym which will ise unavailable morn ings once each month. ROGUE VALLEY LEAGUE Despite the loss of three games to Pine Tree Market, the Seven Up squad held onto the lead in the Rogue Valley League Thurs-. day night. State Forest Patrol climbed to second place by means of a shutout victory over Lorenz Co., and Star Body Works took three from City Hall to go from seventh place to fifth. Vern Allen bowled the high series of the evening with a 579, and Frank Chapman turned in a 230 for high game. According to Dave Luman, game agent for the Pendleton district, only 141 permit holders checked into the Mill Creek area and returned with 54 elk for a success ratio of 38 per cent.
