The biggest chunk on CBS' "The S64.000 Question" went to Steven Frohlich of Princeton, N.J., (f-'ho quit after running his string to S32.000 in the category, "American History." Another contestant, psycholo gist Joyce Brothers of New York reached the $32,000 level by an swering a multiple part query in the category, "Boxing." Mrs. Brothers, 28, can bow out with her stake next week if she chooses or try to double it. If she goes on and loses, she'll iwind up with a consolation auto mobile. A third guest, coal miner Stanley Skeins of Danville, Va., piled up a Sie.Po deposit. He'll be offered the same course as Mrs. Brothers next Tuesday. Skeens' specialty is the Bible. ffhe fourth winner' was Roscoe Wfight of Jamaica, N. Y., who won $512. Wright, a postal em ployee, reached that plateau by answering four questions . on poetry. The quartet's total haul was $512 better than the old record set by the show on Sept. 13- On that night, Marine Capt. Rich ard McCutcheon won S64,000 and Mrs. Myrt Power of Buford, Ga., ran her string to $16,000, a combined total of SSO.OOO. Frohlich, a naturalized Czech who now works as a seed sales man, decided to quit, he said, because he had accomplished his purpose alerting Ameri cans to the fact that a natural ized citizen could know as much about this nation as those who are native-born. The 101-pound Mrs. Brothers, who holds a Ph. D. in psycholo gy, earned her pay by answer ing a question dealing with a city which staged three champ isnships in three days. She was asked to name the city, the year, the fight divisions, the partici pants and the winners. She correctly replied: New Orealns; 1892, heavyweight, lightweight and featherweight championships; James J. Corbett defeated John L. Sullivan, Jack McAulife beat Billy Myer and George Dixon beat Jack Skelly. 1HW . - ,. --ti-'-- ... ',':.-4 . . . csnd only Whirlpool gives you . . . Likely To Alter Decision United Nations, N. Y. (U.R) Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek is determined to block the ad mission of Outer Mongolia to the United Nations and will use the Nationalists' Security Coun cil veto if necessary, Taipeh dis patches said today. U. N. diplomats expressed hope that a second appeal by President Eisenhower to Chiang would bring a reversal of the Na tionalist decision to veto but the Taipeh dispatches said there were "no indications" Chiang would relent. A Nationalist govern m e n t source expressed hope a "proper attitude by the Western powers' on the admission of Outer Mon golia would make a veto unneces sary. But the Nationalists were reported adamant. The Taipeh position was that Outer Mongolia was carved out of China proper and that it is not a sovereign state. This was sim ilar to the U. S. view although recent reports said the United States had relented to permit the entry of 17' other nations. United Press Correspondent William Miller reported from Taipeh that the U. S. embassy had made repeated representa tions to the Nationalists through the foreign office during the past two weeks and that Ambassador Karl Rankin and Charge d'Af f aires' William Cochran had con ferred with Foreign Minister George Yeh. Chinese sources said two ap peals from Mr. Eisenhower had been forwarded to the general issimo one in the form of a letter and the other as a vocal plea made through Rankin. Both failed to sway Chiang, the sources said. Tingfu F. Tsiane. Chinese am-! bassador at the United Nations, I said through a spokesman Tues day China would use the veto ''if necessary" to block Outer Mongolia's membership on the ground that this would be the first step toward recognition of Communist China. This threatened to wreck the 18 country membership deal five Communist and 13 Western backed nations since Russia accepted the proposition on an "all-or-nothing" basis. The feeling within the U. S. delegation was that China's an nouncement tended to destroy whatever bargaining power the Americans had with the Russians on the membership issue. An American source said the United States would not "ask anyone to vote against Outer' . Mongolia" and that it will not "ask anyone to abstain." Some Western diplomatic sources talked of the Chinese veto intention as a step toward "suicide" for the Nationalists in the United Nations, but sources close to the Formosa delegation held that the decision was one of high national principle, and one involving the possible admission of Red China itself. Pailerson Works For Albany Plant Washington (U.R) Gov. Paul Patterson today sought the reason for government indiffer ence to the zirconium plant at Albany, Ore., and confered with federal officials here in an at tempt to have the plant ex panded and reopened. Patterson said he hoped to find out why the plant was clos ed by the government in the face of its zirconium procurement program and why it prohibited suppliers of zirconcium to use the Albany plant. Zirconcium is a by-product of atomic processing and was de veloped at the Albany laboratory of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. If reopened, Patterson told federal officials, the Albany plant would employ 200 to 300 persons and would save the gov ernment money. The now idle plant could be repaired and put into functioning order at a cost of about $250,000, he said. A similar plant would cost three million to four million dollars if bought new.
