The walkout of workers in the Communist-led Chamber of La bor started at 3 p.m. to protest a recent police crackdown on demonstrating construction em ployees. : But three non-Communist un ions stayed on the job, and the effect of the walkout was re duced almost to zero by, two other main factors: 1. Rome's public transport un ion made a last-minute decision to work today. They planned in stead to stage a separate hour and a half strike Thursday. 2. State printers, gas and elec tricity workers and some other service workers decided to strike .at hours more convenient to themselves, thus breaking the mass impact of the walkout. Within 400 years some 2,200 vessels have been wrecked in the turbulent seas off Cape Hat teras, where strong winds churn the Gulf 'Stream as it flows north across shallow reefs. Treacher ous Diamond Shoals, a few miles offshore, is known as the "Grave yard of the Atlantic. Fire losses in the U. S. amount to $2,400,000 daily. About 3,500 Americans have gliderflying licenses. The first show was broadcast Nov. 17. The second broadcast, featuring the school newspaper, The Siskiyou, was released to stations this week. Theme music was recorded by Miss Helen Robinson of the SOC music department on Mrs. R. D. Lamb's organ. The program feautres a club, organization, activity, or depart ment at SOC, and includes an interview with a student. A short sports feature is included, with the remainder of the program for school news. Canterbury Club Formed At Southern Oregon Ashland Canterbury club, an , organization for Episcopal students, has been organized at Southern Oregon college by the Rev. John Thompson, pastor of Trinity Episcopal church, Ash land. Meetings will be the first and third Friday noons at Susanne Homes hall. Interested students are urged to attend. Elected to lead the group are Dan Kellington, president, and Lynn Erwin, secretary-treasurer. Grier Nicholl, SOC faculty mem ber, and Rev. Production Staff For Play Announced Ashland Dr. Dorothy Stolp, Southern Oregon college play director, has announced the pro duction staff for the fall comedy. "Mr. Jim Passes By," which will be presented Dec. 9 and 10 in Churchill, hall auditorium. Audrey Russell, Myrtle Point, is assistant director. Three mem bers of the stage scenery and lighting class head the stage staff, Larry Kenyon, Lebanon, Noel Turner, Ashland, and Jim Womack, Klamath Falls. Kenyon is in charge of the scenery crew, Turner is property manager, and Jim Womack, SOC student body president, is stage manager. Edith Baker, Medford, is the wardrobe ' mistress and JoAnn Norton, Coos Bay, heads the makeup crew. Dick Simonson, Medford, president of the Busi ness club, has been named busi ness manager. Dick Puckett, Keno, drama club president, will be in charge of the house and ushers. Production staff members earn points for Alpha Phi Omega, a national dramatic honorary by participating in drama activities. Reidy, and a friend, Arthur Garon, both of Manches ter, N.H. James, who sold his home in New Hampshire recently and who had not seen his mother for four years, drove west stopping along the way to see points of in terest arriving here in time for Thanksgiving. The two boys plan to go to Los Angeles to settle. Mrs. Ruby Quackenbush is spending the holidays with her daughters and families in San Francisco and Oakland. Later this week she will leave there for Texas to visit with another daughter and family. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Zimmer, for merly of this area and now of Sweet Home, Ore., are the par ents of twin daughters born on Thanksgiving day. Grandpar ents are Mr. and Mrs. Jim Clem ent, Gold Hill, and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Zimmer, Grants Pass. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Stalsworth up Birdseya Creek burned to the ground last week, leaving the family without any thing. The family is well known around this area, formerly living at the Old Stage house at the Ded Rio orchards where he worked. The family needs help as he was laid off recently at a mill where he was employed. They have three children, Don ald, 16, who attended grade school at Gold Hill, and two daughters, aged 3 and 2 years. " '" Way Cleared for Hew Portland Hotel Portland (U.R) The way has been cleared for final negotia tions on a proposal for a $6,000, 000 "highway-suburban" hotel in Portland. Incorporation papers '. were filed at Salem for the Portland Sheraton Corporation, a subsid iary of the nationwide Sheraton hotel chain of Boston. The arti cles listed 100 shares of no par value stock. The hotel would be located on a four block area on the Lloyd tract just north of the Depart ment of Interior building.. Pre liminary architectural plans have been completed, and Sher aton and Lloyd officials were scheduled to meet in New York next week to integrate the hotel into the proposed Lloyd center. The hotel would have 350 rooms at first, but later would be expanded to a total of 550 , rooms. A Sheraton official said i the structure would have many motel features. Norblad wrote Rep. Carl Vin son, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee that the Kellogg Park land should be returned to the tax . rolls and made available for industry.
