7 W 3 IL I 111 VdlWllw VI After Teacher Beaten En Integrated Class Erath, La. U.R) A Roman Catholic priest disclosed today that his life was threatened after a bishop excommunicated two women accused of beating a teacher of an integrated cate chism class. Father A. J. Labbe, pastor of the 2500-member parish which includes Our ILady of Lourdes church where the beating inci dent was reported, said a college student is acting as his body guard. Two women were excommuni cated from the Catholic church, harshest and most feared discip linary measure imposed on a member, and other parishioners were threatened with similar treatment by Bishop Jules B. Jeanmard of. Lafayette. Orders Nailed To Door The orders were nailed to the door of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and read to all masses yesterday, threatened other chuch members with "automatic excommunication if there are any more signs of violence." Father Labbe said the decree stated that if there are any more vigns of violence the church also will be closed. The order by Jeanmard, for 25 years a bishop who has been cited by Negro parishoners in the past for his "historic, priest ly leadership and service," will remain up until ordered down himself. Anyone else removing the decree was threatened with "immediate excommunication." Classes in the church school were halted after what Labbe described as the "severe" beat ing of the teacher but he said instructions would be resumed on Dec. 5. The latest disorder followed by several weeks the closing of a Catholic church at Jesuit Bend, la., because parishoners there had objected to the use of a Ne gro priest for Sunday masses. The FBI has been investigating the Jesuit Bend affair. , The Catholic Church in Louis iana has taken other strong mea sures recently to slap down what it deems interference in church functions which have arisen be cause of the state's traditional adherence to the color barrier in most all public affairs. Hells Canyon, on the Snake river between Idaho and Ore gon, is the deepest gorge on the continent and one of the out standing dam sites in the Colum bia river basin. Whether the government or private interests should develop power there has been a controversial issue for more than 15 years. An FPC examiner ruled earl ier this year after lengthy hear ings that Idaho Power should be permitted to go ahead with con struction of one of its three pro posed dams, but said decision on the other two should be with held until later. The commis sion, howeer, authorized Idaho Power to go ahead with all three dams at spaced intervals. The National Hells Canyon Association favors a single high dam built by the federal government. x NNIE WEARING BOOTS AND HAT, this Texas steer owned by Halbert and Fawcett Ranch, Sonora, is all set for Chicago's uncertain weather while awaiting judging at fifty-sixth an nual International Livestock Exposition.
