Dr. John J. Andu- WvWfVU-m of Fort Worth, T e x., e m p hasized an important point which is not yet as widely known as it should be. This point is that today tests for syph ilis are so sen- ime mat usually they re pond positively to little scars left by, an old infection. When a man has had excellent treat ment with penicillin, when he is past 60, when he got his syphilis early in life, when, for a life time he has had no symptoms of the disease, and especially when there are no signs of in volvement of the nervous sys tem, the patient need not go on taking one course of treatment after another as some now do. Dr. Andujar reported cases in which a patient had gone on de manding and getting three, four, five, or even 12 courses of treat ment after an expert would have said he had enough. It should be a great comfort to many persons with a positive Wassermann or Kahn or Kline test to know that, after they have been without symptoms for 30 years, and after they have had excellent treatment they are not likely to infect anyone or be dangerous to anyone. They are not likely to develop symp toms of the disease. In many cases the expert can learn much by noting that the less sensitive type of test for syphilis, such as the old Wasser mann, will react negatively while an extremely sensitive . test, like the Kline or the Hin ton, will be positive. The Kahn test may be partially positive. So often this means that the patient once had syphilis but is now cured. Years To Enact Tests Dr. Andujar made the import- point that it took many years for legislators to enact laws requir ing compulsory tests for syphilis, especially for persons who plan lo marry. .Now it will probably take many years before legisla tors can be induced to modify the laws so that the person who has a cured and harmless syphilis, or what looks like a positive Wassermann but isn't, will not be penalized. There are a few innocent per sons who, on routine testing, are found to have what looks like a positive test for syphilis but which is due to peculiarities in the blood that can perhaps be identified by an expert, and de clared harmless. I remember a minister's wife who had what looked like a posi tive wassermann. She was a quiet, mousy little woman who said she had never misbehaved in any way. Her husband's test was negative. Eve or all day Sat. $3.50 never had any symptoms to sug gest that she had received syphilis" from a gay father. The chances were that it was a "false positive." I have seen a number of tragic cases in which a fine and virginal young woman on being exam ined before marriage, was found to have a highly positive Wasser mann test. In some of these cases, experts in the field of blood dis eases, by making special studies, were able to explain what was wrong and to give much encour agement. The big point I would make is that a hundred times I have heard expert syphilologists say to a person past 60, "You have been treated enough; your spinal fluid is normal, ' and I am not worried about you; try to cheer up now, and quit having "Wasser- man tests made." Two Ways of Handling People A fine woman tells me that she and her husband were once terribly upset because a phy sician told the husband bluntly that he had an incurable and soon-to-be-fatal disease. The poor people were so flattened that they could hardly carry on with their unhappiness. The husband sat down in his room and brood ed in silence. The wife could not lift him out of his depression. j Later, the couple found another 'specialist who, as my informant I said, "talked with us for an hour, j He agreed that the other doctor's aiagnosis was correct, dui oy ex plaining things with the help of a .diagram, by saying that my husband might easily live for several more years, by showing sympathy and expressing confi dence in his face and voice, he gave us hope again, and with this my husband picked up and soon went back to work. He became a different man: His interests returned, and he became full of plans for the future. It was so wonderful wnen he started to talk to me again." As the woman said, "How strange: both doctors were cor rect in their diagnosis, and their treatment was the same; both were so busy that they were al most killing themselves with overwork: and yet, with all that, one of them took . time to sit down and give us back hope and life." I can never accept the excuse given by some -of my good friends in medicine, that they are too busy to stop to cheer up a man who has been told that he has a fatal disease. Why? Be cause for years I watched men like the Mayo brothers, who al though burdened with a huge practice and great responsibili ties, always stopped for a few minutes to give comfort and hope to a fear-stricken patient and to the spouse.
