SPORTS Red Raiders Have Three On Star Club Portland U.R) Eastern Ore gon College of Education won lour berths on the all-Oregon Collegiate Conference team se lected by the league's football coaches and released here Satur day. Youngest man on the young ll-star team was Weldon Lewis, 194-pound freshman center on the, EOCE co-champion team. Other EOCE players picked were Jac.k Harmon, 180-pound left end; Bill West, 210-pound junior fullback picked for the right tackle slot, and Elvin Daggett, 176-pound right half. All three re juniors. Co-champs Southern Oregon and Oregon College of Education landed three players apiece on the first team. (U.R) Texas Christian university will meet the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2. Felix McKnight, president of the Cotton Bowl Athletic associ- pound junior quarterback, and Don Korns, 195-pound sopho more fullback. OCE members of the squad were Doug Zitek at right end, a 190-pound sophomore; Larry Buss at left half, a 160-pound sophomore, and Paul Riley at right guard, a 185-pound senior. Jack Knudsen, a 21-pound left guard, was the only Portland State player to make the squad, and one of two seniors named to a first team slot. Initiative Petition for Closing Coastal Streams to Commercial Fishing Brings Hot Discussion Bend (U.k; An initiative pe tition to close all Oregon coast al streams south of the Colum bia river to commercial fishing for salmon and steelhead came in for some heated discussion Friday at opening of the Oregon Izaak Walton League here. Rollin E. Bowles, Portland at torney and legal adviser for the state Izaak Waltons, told a panel discussion group that a fluctuat ing resource such as fish cannot be managed by fixed legislation. He said spawning areas would support only so many fish and insisted it would be "utter folly ation, announced Ole Miss' se lection last night, after Ole Miss bested Mississippi State, 26-0. That gave Ole Miss a 9-1 re cord for the season. .TCU's only loss wts to Texas A&M. TCU won the Southwest Con ference championship Saturday with a 20-13 victory- over its traditional enemy, Southern Methodist university, in Fort Worth, Tex. It appeared that Navy had the inside track on the Cotton Bowl invitation, until Army beat Navy to allow these spawning beds to become gutted with salmon and steelhead. Charles V. Stanton, editor of the Roseburg News Review and a supporter of the bill, said in a prepared statement that "coast al streams proposed to be closed provided only 3.3 per cent of the total commercial fishery yield ing less than 10 per cent of all salmon and steelhead. Stanton was unable to be pres ent and his paper was read by William Niskanen of Bend. The Roseburg editor in his statement said " a great deal of fuss" was being made by com mercial 'fishermen about a very small amount of production.
