EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, November 25, 1955 Permanent Human Inhabitation of Antarctic Seen Washington U.R) Rear Adm. Richard E. Byrd said yes terday he believes the forthcom ing U.S. Antarctic expedition will mark the beginning of per manent human inhabitation of that icy continent. He envisioned eventual estab lishment of small "villages" pop ulated by perhaps 500 persons, chiefly civilians. Byrd who has charge of the expedition made the statement at an unusual Thanksgiving Day news conference. He leaves tomorrow by plane for Auckland, New Zealand, jumping off spot where he will - meet the seven U. S. ships and 15 airplanes already en route to the Antarctic. Byrd said that some of the bases used for the expedition's explorations, now planned until 1959, may become sites of per manent villages. "1 don't think , the Antarctic will henceforth be such a lonely place as it has been," he said. Despite the holiday, 25 news men and photographers showed up for the interview, which Byrd said was indicative of the extra ordinary interest of the people of the United States in the Antarc tic program. Byrd, officer in charge of U. S. Antarctic programs, and his chief of staff, Capt. Laurence Matthews will stop overnight tomorrow in San Francisco, and overnight Saturday at Honolulu en route to Auckland. Byrd said the expedition will operate from five bases or sta tions in Antarctica. Dizzy Gillespie a Different Man As He Prepares for Jazz Trip to Asia Washington (U.R) Dizzy is a different kind of cat these days. He doesn't talk like some of the jazz greats he will join as ambassador of bop in Asia under a new State Department move to make the cold war real cool. In fact, Dizzy Gillespie doesn't even art too much like the Dizzy Gillespie of 14 years ago whose antics got him his nickname and whose horn gave out with a new kind of jazz that won him the title "Father of Bop." The famous cap once copied by Gillespie fans is no more. The real gone goatee has been re placed by a small fringe of whis ker under his lower lip. He plays chess now between sets. His wife, a former chorus dancer, now paints. Getting Old And at 38, Gillespie who says he's getting "old as Methuselah" glasses. His subdued tweed coats look like Brooks Brothers. His high style shoes look like Italy. Dizzy and his quintet got a "real good reception" each of the six times they toured Europe. He's never toured Asia, but thinks "They'll like it too it's a very good idea." Satchmo, Too The department plans to make Dizzy and "Satchmo" Louis Arm- talks about the history of the "native American music" he plays. The stocky boy from Cheraw, S.C., whose real front name is John, hasn'tt grown as intense as some jazz fanatics who argue their kind of music as seriously as the long hairs theirs. But al most. He wears tortoise shell-frame strong tne oacKbone of a pro gram beaming bop in person and via the Voice of America to Asia. Last week Dizzy taped some tunes and talk for the Voice, giv ing commentary between records and his and other jazz kings. Waitresses at the Jazz Club, where he and his "frantic horn" were holding forth got used to hollering up to the chess-playing room, "The Voice Is on the i phone, Mr. Gillespie Dizzy explains bop as an "in terpretation of jazz." He says it began with spirituals and moved on through blues, ragtime, dixie and swing Count Baisie swing, not Sammy Kaye's. Izvestia, quoting the Commit tee on State Security, said No vikov decided to give up after reading the amnesty edict of Sept. 17 freeing all former Soviet citizens collaborating with German occupation troops. Novikov said he went to Ger many in 1942 seeking farm work. He went to Morocco and was drawn into an emigree anti- Soviet organization in 1952. Then he was handed over to a foreign intelligence service in West Germany, he said. Novikov said he was given the alias of "Nikolai Ivanovich Nikitin," handed false docu ments and "dropped" on Byelo- Russian soil. Izvestia said Novikov was sentenced to the comparatively light sentence of five years in exile in view of his "voluntary surrender and his sincere re grets." . , A Nichol's Worth of Comment On This and That By HARMAN W. NICHOLS United Prat Futiiw Writer If on the "seek and ye shall find" system. Most of us old-timers type cross-handed, sometimes reach ing to the left, by radar or in stinct or habit to find the "W" which is a neighbor of the letter "Q" on the' standard keyboard. The "W" has been moved to the lower deck on the new keyboard and now keeps company with the "M" on the left and the "V" on the right. As of now we use the lower case "L" for a one, and the top back runs from two to zero right on to the zero. Most newspapermen can count that high in sequence. On the new keyboard the numbers run 7, 5, 3, 1, 9, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8. What a mess! But even worse is the fact that the new board has hidden the let ter, "X". They must have left it in the alphabet, but I'll swear I can't find it anywhere. And "X" is one of the most important let ters. We use it to cross, out words. Lyndon John son (D-Tex.), thinks its a fine idea. She can do about 90 words a minute now, and is perfectly willing to try a machine that could step her up to 120 words a minute. '"If 1 can stand the pace," Mildred Deen said. Mrs. Jane Johnson, a secre tary for Murray Snyder, assist ant press secretary at the White House, threw up her hands at the thought. Must Learn Anew "Why didn't they think of that business of having all the vowels where they are handy in the first place 83 years ago?" she asked. "We'll have to learn all over again if this new keyboard is ac cepted. Might even have to go back to school. Mrs. Henrietta O'Donoghue in Sen. Estes Kefauver's office has been with the Tennessee Demo crat since 1942. She doesn't like the idea of changing her ways after typing all these years. The Chattanooga, Tenn., lady said she'll do her best if a chance comes, "but it might be quite a trial." The amiable Flo Bratten, who has been with "junior senator" Alben W. Barkley since he started in politics way back there, says the government can have its new typewriters if the government wants them. "I don't care," said she. Shopping BagNote Clues in Robbery Portland (U.R) A shopping bag with 11 oranges, a black glove and a holdup note inside was about the only lead Port land police and the FBI had to go on today in their investiga tion of Wednesday's robbery of the main branch of the First National Bank here. The bag was found abandoned in one of the booths of a South west Washington street restau rant. The bag was not found until about two hours after the bank was robbed at 4:40 p.m. Police believed the bag was the one in which a six-foot man in his middle or late twenties stuffed $1019 that he took from Mrs. Gertrude D u n f o r d, the teller. Detectives said they found several latent fingerprints on the black marble counter top at Mrs. Dunford's window and those were being checked for a pos sible clue to the bandit's identity. INDIANS GET BEER Toledo, la. (U.R) It's still illegal to sell "fire water" to In dians in Iowa, but a loophole al lows them to get beer. Tama county attorney Walter Willett ruled the sale of beer to Indians legal because the Iowa code does not include beer as an intoxicat ing liquor. Why Suffer Longer?
