The company has not released any Salk polio vaccine for sev eral months. The United Press was informed by other sources that one reason for this was that Parke Davis had been develop ing ultraviolet radiation to pro vide an extra margin of safety for its Salk vaccine output. More Safety Impossible But Company President Harry J. Loynd denied in a formal statement that his firm "has secre-tly developed a system of ultra-violet radiation to provide an extra measure of safety." "Safety of the vaccine was proven long ago, and government standards for its manufacture were established accordingly," he said. "It is impossible for Parke Davis or any other com pany to develop a product that is safer than safe. HILL Chicago (U.R) The checks with which a driver pays for highway safety are like any checks, a National Safety Coun cil spokesman said today. They're all blank to start with. To have value, he has to fill them in himself. If he uses them, the council says, he has a good chance of being alive for Safe Driving Day Dec. 1, or any given day. Your Manners: Discourtesy ranks high among driver viola tions in fatal accidents. Traffic experts say if motor ists will be conscientious in mak ing all those checks they can do better than equal the 15 per cent dropoff in accidents re corded on S-D Day in 1954. Average Year For Forest Fires Portland (U.R) The past year was an average one for fire fighters in federal forests in the Pacific Northwest. The Regional Forester's office here reported yesterday that slightly more than 1,000 fires had been reported on national forest protected lands. September was the worst month of the season with 342 fires. out of the 1,000. All the fires that month started during the dry lightning storms which occurred over the Labor Day weekend on seven Oregon forests. During the period Sept. 4 to 12, about four-fifths of the entire season's acreage of burn was re ported from the spread of the lightning fires. For the entire season, light ning started 620 fires. Smokers caused 133; lumbering 20; trains 15; campfires 129; debris burn ing 27; incendiarists 1, and 63 fires had miscellaneous origins Audrey Hepburn, ferret Deny Rumors of Divorce Amsterdam (U.R) Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer yester day denied rumors they were planning a divorce, and Ferrer hinted he might sue the Italian weekly l'Europeo that published the rumor. The "independent Amsterdam daily de Telegraff said today the couple denied the rumor iu an exclusive telephone interview and reported they answered questions in the Paris hotel suite with: "A divorce? Out of the question."
