SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, November 22, 1935 Health Officer Reports on Annua! Conference of APHA Public health problems result ing from an increasing percent age of old people in the popula tion of the United States were discussed at the annual Ameri can Public Health association meeting in Kansas City, Mo., Dr. A. Erin Merkel, county health officer, said yesterday. Dr. Merkel returned Friday from a veek of association meet ings in Kansas City. Polio au thorities', who gave reports at the meeting, emphasized that the Salk vaccine is now perfectly safe and 90 per cent effective against paralytic polio, Merkel said. Priority Group All parents with children un der 15 years old should have them inoculated against polio, Merkel said, as children of that age are now included in the pri ority group for which the vac cine is available. It was pointed out at the meeting that an increase in dis eases more commonly found among old people, such as heart trouble, hardening of the arter ies, cancer, and mental disturb ances, could be expected as the number of people in the older age groups increased. An increase in the percentage of old people in the population is expected as a result of in creased life expectancy and an anticipated reduction in birth : rate. Severe Problems A severe problem of rehabili tation of the aged was discussed j at the meetings. As old people find they can no longer continue with their work, because of sick ness or mental problems, it will be necessary to find other occu pations for them, Merkel said. The increasing problems of ac cidents was also discussed at the meetings. Accidents, at present, are the greatest cause of death for people between the ages of 1 and 45, Merkel said. This drug is also reported to eliminate the worry of stage performers on first nights, men scheduled to make speeches and to give con fidence to fellows who are go ing to ask the boss for a raise. It is said to be harmless and non habit forming. However, some of its critics say it inspires autoists who take it with an over-confidence that leads to reckless driving.
