o 47 SURVIVE CRASH Firemen and rescue workers carry a body from wreckage of a D04 that crashed on takeoff from Boeing Field at Seattle. The plane, on Govern ment contract, had 74 persons aboard, including 66 soldiers returning home from the Orient. It crashed into a house setting it afire but a woman and five children in the house escaped. Forty-seven persons aboard the plane escaped but 27 others were killed in the crash. Silver Beaver Awards Presented To 2 Area Boy Scout Leaders Dr. Elmo Stevenson, president of Southern Oregon college at Ashland, and John Lachenmyer of Dunsmuir were presented sil ver beaver awards at the annual recognition banquet of the Cra ter Lake area council of Boy Scouts of America last night at Hedrick Junior High school. Presenting the awards were Hubert Hamilton, chairman of the Shasta Silvertip district, and Mel Hogan, member of the exec utive board. Dr. Stevenson is president of the council. Leader Awards Three golden leader awards were presented by J. A. Mc Dougall, council commissioner, for an outstanding job in leader ship. Those receiving awards were Lawson Scott, cub master of pack 15, Phoenix; Ralph Hu ber, scoutmaster, troop 20, Cave Junction; and Robert Cotton, ad visor, post 22, Grants Pass. William Roy Clary, scout master, troop 23, Grants Pass, was presented the wood badge beads award for completing spe cial training in the Boy Scout program. Fred Kitterman of Grants Pass made the presenta tion. Those r e'c e i v i n g scouter's awards included Mike Morris, leadership training, Big Pines district; Jim Grigsby, assistant commissioner, Big Pines district; George Davey, committeeman, troop 1, Medford; Carl Borg, SM, troop 5, Medford, and John Schroeder, CM, pack 8, Medford. Scouter's key awards were pre sented to Carl Olson, Jack Thompson, both of Medford; Lawson Scott Jr., Phoenix; Rob ert Buffum, Dom Favero and Russell Hoskins, Yreka; M. C. Bill Haines, Pondosa, and An drew Schmidt, Grants Pass. Officers elected for the coming year include George 'C. Flana gan, Medford, president; Dr. Stevenson, Ashland, George R. Schrader, Mt. Shasta and Robert D. Manchel, Grants Pass, vice presidents; Frank Bash, Med ford, treasurer; and J. A. Mc Dougall, Medford, scout commis sioner. Air traffic has been paralyzed for two weeks by a strike of ground workers and weather specialists on the airfields. San Queniin Inmates Searched for Drugs San Quentin, Calif. (U.R) Prison officials staged an inten sive shakedown of San Quentin inmates today in a search for half the prison's narcotics sup ply which was stolen from a strong room in the hospital ward. Authorities feared the narcot ics were put in circulation among the convicts. Guardskept a close watch on all known" ad dicts and users.
