o SIX MEOTORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Around Hollywood Hollywood (U.R) Eva Marie Saint won acclaim and a gold Oscar for roles that matched her last name, but she's switched to sophisticat ed comedy by putting up her long hair. The slender actress collect ed an Acad emy Award for "On the Water- Aline Mosbr front" and more plaudits for "Our Town" cn television with her blonde mop brushing her shoulders. This month she finally got around to working in a Holly wood movie. "On the Waterfront" was made in New York. Comedy Now Instead of doing tearful love scenes, the Oscar-winner is bouncing through a Bob Hope comedy with a grown-up hair do to match. "The studio suggested I put up my hair," Eva admitted to day over lunch in the studio commissary. "It helps me with the character. That kind of little thing gives you a feeling. More sophisticated. "Little things .matter. I Producers Norman Panama ! and Melvin Frank were inspired i j.,.. ..... . .. ... iur mis surprise casting ot tne year when they watched Eva Marie accept her Oscar on TV last year. They decided her re marks about her forthcoming baby showed she had warmth and a flair for comedy and could be another Carole Lombard. The beautiful actress accepted the Hope comedy over a stack of other top scripts because it would show she could be versatile. "I had become very bored with playing "Evie," she said. "After 'Waterfront' the only scripts were that type." At first, set workers say, Eva Marie was "floored" by the usual mob of visitors to a Hope set, from Prince Albert of Bel gium to Rocky Marciano. Hope also was "subdued" around the Oscar winner but now "they break each other up laughing." House Hunters Eva Marie and her husband, TV director Jeff Hayden, once were confirmed New Yorkers But Hayden recently signed a seven-year directing contract with MGM, and the couple are scouting for a house here so they can settle among the orange trees and smog. The actress with the little girl hair-do is being delueed with top scripts bv everv studio, and movie-makers guarantee she's be "the Grace Kelly of 1956" long hair or short. "I keep my hair long because if I cut it I think my husband would divorce me," she smiled.
